Menopause can be a difficult phase to go through for any woman. Aside from the thought of dealing with physical and emotional changes, menopause has been a cause of unnecessary confusion and worry to those who are nearing this specific phase because they don’t know how to deal with other symptoms.

Common menopausal symptoms include changes in period patterns, hot flushes, night sweats usually followed by a chill, altered sleeping patterns or troubled sleeps, vaginal atrophy or vaginal dryness, thinning, or itching, depression, mood swings and emotional fluctuations, confusion or inability to focus on things and carrying out tasks, and hair loss or growth on unlikely areas such as the face.

Detailed info and services about vaginal atrophy treatment new york city here.

Menopause may also cause more serious health problems such as obesity, osteoporosis, and heart attack in the long run if not paid attention. Make sure that you know and are well aware of other menopausal symptoms so you can understand it fully.

PROPOSED TREATMENT AND ALTERNATIVES

If you are one of those who are nearing menopausal years, educating yourself on how you can mange the symptoms and the effects of menopause can help you start living your life in harmony.

Experts suggest that eating a healthy diet along with regular exercise during menopausal years is effective to cope up and treat these symptoms. But if you think you can no longer handle the symptoms of menopause, then it is now time to seek for professional help or treatment to help you out.

Studies show that the need of women to seek for professional help varies on her need and emotional stability. Experts say that although many menopausal women do not really need special treatments for menopause, there are those who need it to overcome their difficulties.

For those women who are thinking of getting a treatment, there are various menopausal treatments available today. Since there is no single treatment that sits down well to all women, it is best if you consult your physician first before getting any of these treatments.

By doing this, you can ask your doctor to discuss with you the treatments that can be perfect for you. The following are the most popular menopause available today.

  1. Hormone therapy (HT) or Hormone Therapy Replacement (HRT) is one of the most popular menopausal treatments today. Undergoing through this treatment will reduce and relieve menopausal symptoms like vaginal dryness, hot flushes and night sweats. Recent studies have warranted special caution in using HRT as they may be associated with an increase in heart problems.

Experts agree that HT/HRT should be taken at the beginning of menopause because it can be an effective solution to bone loss or osteoporosis because it can increase bone density by around five percent in two years and can even reduces the risk of spinal fractures by 40 percent.

A follow up after the menopausal years is as equally important to ensure the maximum effect of the therapy.

Experts say that HT is not recommended for the prevention of heart or bone disease, stroke, and memory loss. And since there many kinds of HTs, the best way to know which one is the best for you is by consulting so he/she can suggest what’s most suitable type for you.

  1. Bisphosphonates, on the other hand helps the renewal of bone cells that are constantly being broken down. This treatment prevents bone loss by hindering the breakdown process. Although this is effective in preventing osteoporosis, experts warns the interested patients to brace for side effects like gastrointestinal upsets.

Today, the most commonly used bisphosphonates include Fosamax, Actonel and Didrocal that should be taken daily or weekly.

  1. Selective Estrogen Receptor Modulators (SERMs) is also one of the popular treatments because it supplies the natural estrogen of the body. Patients must look out for the potential side effects of SERMs that may include hot flushes and vein coagulation.

Other effective menopause treatment include Tibolone (Livial) therapy, parathyroid therapy, Vitamin D and calcium supplements and “Bioidentical” hormone therapy.

Overall, nothing replaces good healthy living habits like exercising regularly, eating well and relaxing,

Wikinews interviews Gene Amondson, Prohibition Party presidential nominee

Friday, June 6, 2008

While nearly all coverage of the 2008 Presidential election has focused on the Democratic and Republican candidates, the race for the White House also includes independents and third-party candidates. These prospects represent a variety of views that may not be acknowledged by the major party platforms.

Wikinews has reached out to these candidates throughout the campaign. We now interview the Prohibition Party Presidential nominee Gene Amondson, a preacher, artist and prohibition activist.

Why do you want to be President?

With one out of nine blacks between twenty and thirty-four in prison, Prohibition will come again for the fourth time.

Have you ever run for political office before? (President, senate, congress, city councilor, school trustee… etc.) Have you ever been a member of a political party, other than the one you’re currently in?

I grew up Republican; my brother was [a] state Senator.

What skills or ideas do you bring from this position, or previous positions, that will benefit the Oval Office?

I run because no one else will help America with its number one problem: where is the church? That had one Sunday set aside each year to get kids to take a pledge – never to drink (that was 60 years ago).

Campaigning for the American presidency is one of the most expensive exercises in the world. How do you deal with the cost and fundraising?

If we could cut off the money that goes to Dobson, the Salvation Army, Union Gospel Vision, World Vision, Graham, America could save our children from drunk parents. Ohio has a quarter of a million children abused each year by a drunk parent.
[Even] with MADD Mothers and millions of dollars, drunk driving has not gone down in ten years.

What are you/were you looking for in a running mate?

I have a running mate, but would like Newt Gingrich.
Third party people do not win but we say wise things

Can you win the 2008 Presidential election?

Third party people do not win but we say wise things.

If you can’t make it into the Oval Office, whom would you prefer seeing taking the presidency?

We need McCain to get good Supreme Court judges, not the Democrats. Jewish people must be wise like, Mayor Ed Koch. I have to vote Republican, or kiss Israel goodbye. Of the three front runners, only McCain will help Israel.

What should the American people keep in mind, when heading to the polls this November?

Liberal Democrats win because they promise everything, like: America can give you everything; you do not even have to work; let anyone come across our borders; eat, drink and be merry.

Anything else you want to add?

We are America’s third oldest party, [we have been around for] 137 years. Your kids need you sober. You booze you lose. Like crime and drugs: keep selling alcohol. America’s greatest years were the fourteen years of prohibition: our prisons and mental institutions [were] emptied. If you had a dog that bit every third person what would you do?
You would shoot that dog. Alcohol has no taste….I[f] I don’t like you sober, I won’t like [you] with a few beers. Responsible drinking – responsible smoking – dumb and dumber.
We need your help [contact me] at http://www.geneamondson.com [or call] 206-463-6333.

Website petitioning in an attempt to save old trillium logo

Thursday, June 29, 2006

The Ontario Liberal Party created a new Ontario trillium logo at a cost of $219,000 dollars. Many people and the PC Party of Ontario call it a waste of time and money. They replaced the logo with a version of the flower similar to the party’s trademark. The picture can be seen here [1].

Now the Progressive Conservatives have started a new website. The website is a petition to save the old trillium logo. The website just started yesterday. PC leader John Tory had lots of interviews today.

“You just don’t arbitrarily tamper with it under cover of darkness,” PC Leader John Tory said yesterday, launching the website savethetrillium.ca. “It survived more or less intact through seven governments under all parties until Dalton McGuinty and his partisan pork barrellers got their hands on it,” said John Tory. He also said “it is wasting time and money fiddling with marketing and logos while gun violence and energy problems go unattended”. Tory calls it a useless use of funds and an inappropriate change because the new logo too closely resembles the flower seen in the Liberal Party banner.

The logo was introduced in 1964. It has undergone minor redesigns, but always remained a stylized T-shaped trillium. The latest version, designed by Toronto advertising agency Bensimon Byrne, is more angular and has no border.

“It’s awful,” Keith Rushton, a professor of design at the Ontario College of Art and Design. “It was a drastic change. It’s a very aggressive, hostile logo.”

The Liberals have defended the logo revamp saying “it was time to modernize the symbol in order to attract new business to the province”.

For now, the Torys will leave it to the Canadian public.

Tom Cruise debates psychiatry on NBC’s Today show

Saturday, June 25, 2005

In an interview on NBC’s Today show with Matt Lauer, Tom Cruise aggressively defended his opposition to psychiatry and anti-depressive drugs. This occurred after being asked questions about his criticism of Brooke Shields, who has been taking drugs, including Paxil, for postpartum depression. Cruise is usually known for keeping his cool in interviews, but recently he has been slightly more unbound.

Cruise’s statements, including “Psychiatry is a pseudoscience“, and “There is no such thing as a chemical imbalance in a body”, reflect the beliefs of the Church of Scientology, of which he is a member. The interview became particularly tense when Lauer mentioned that he knew people who had been helped by taking Ritalin, an attention-deficit disorder drug.

“Matt, Matt, you don’t even — you’re glib,” Cruise responded. “You don’t even know what Ritalin is. If you start talking about chemical imbalance, you have to evaluate and read the research papers on how they came up with these theories, Matt, OK. That’s what I’ve done.”

Cruise went on to say: “You don’t know the history of psychiatry, I do.”

Cruise has not formally studied medicine beyond a high school education, having dropped out in his senior year (1980) to pursue an acting career. In light of this, some members of the psychiatric community have refuted Cruise’s controversial statements. Dr. John Scully, medical director of the American Psychiatric Association, has said “The illnesses we treat – anxiety, depression – are very real illnesses…The treatments work. We have demonstrated that through robust scientific study.”

Lauer insisted that Ritalin helped people: “You’re telling me what’s worked for people I know or hasn’t worked for people I know. I’m telling you, I’ve lived with these people and they’re better,” Lauer said.

Cruise hinted that Lauer was promoting Ritalin and Lauer scoffed: “I am not. I’m telling you in their cases, in their individual case, it worked.”

The exchange ended when the two basically agreed to disagree. Cruise, who is 42, did admit that one of his goals is to speak more about Scientology in an effort to get people to understand it better.

Scientology has historically been at odds with the established medical and mental health community. The rift dates back to the 1950s and Scientology’s founding father L. Ron Hubbard. In his book, “Dianetics: The Modern Science of Mental Health”, published in 1950, Hubbard claims that Dianetics (later called Scientology) could cure the majority of human ailments. These claims were sharply disputed by a variety of mainstream science and medical professionals including psychiatrists.

On Monday, June 27, 2005, the American Psychiatric Association released a statement that stated the following:”It is irresponsible for Mr. Cruise to use his movie publicity tour to promote his own ideological views and deter people with mental illness from getting the care they need…Rigorous, published, peer-reviewed research clearly demonstrates that treatment (of mental illness) works…It is unfortunate that in the face of this remarkable scientific and clinical progress that a small number of individuals and groups persist in questioning its legitimacy.”

The APA represents nearly 36,000 physicians specialising in the diagnosis and treatment of mental illness.

Different Types of Translation Equipment

by

Jordan Rocksmith

The world is a much smaller place now than it was just 50 years ago, and this opens countless possibilities and opportunities.

[youtube]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mivklKP2Ox0[/youtube]

Part of this connection among those who speak different languages can be attributed to translation equipment. It is used every day by various types of businesses and events, such as tour groups, business meetings, and conventions. Here are the general types of translation equipment that are used in these instances.Receiver HeadphonesReceiver headphones are used at any event where translation equipment is needed. The translator speaks into a microphone and the sound is transmitted to all of those who are wearing receiver headphones. This way, a tourist sitting on a bus who speaks a different language from the tour guide can have the same tour experience as everyone else. Likewise, audience members at a business meeting can hear a translation of any speeches that are given in a different language, and those that are at a convention can do the same. The headphones allow for a discreet way to communicate with those who need to listen to a translator.Microphone HeadsetsThese headsets are most often used for tour guide translators. The translator speaks into the microphone and the sound is transmitted to those with receiver headphones. More than one person can be using microphone headsets at a time if there is more than one language needed.TransmittersTransmitters of many sizes and types are used for the microphones and headsets to connect. Some transmitters will need to be plugged in for power. These are usually more powerful and are used for larger audiences, meaning they will need to transmit a signal to more equipment. There are also portable transmitters, which are battery powered and can be used for smaller amounts of transmitted signals, such as tour buses or meetings. These are great for groups that will be more mobile, like walking around a city or a building. As long as the headphones are within signal range of the portable transmitters, they are a great fit for these types of events.ReceiversTransmitters do not communicate directly to the headphones. They actually communicate with the receivers, which then route the sound to the headphones. Those using receiver headphones carry with them small receivers to capture the signal from transmitters. Basically, the order goes like this: From the microphone, to the transmitter, to the receiver, and to the headphones. Receivers can be small and discreet, and they usually are able to be clipped onto a shirt or pants for ease of use.Transport CasesIf you need to use these 4 pieces of equipment, it might sound like a lot of little objects to carry. Some companies will allow you to use a transport case or multiple cases that are specifically designed to transport the equipment. This will keep the equipment safe and make storage and transportation a breeze.Translation BoothsBooths are larger stations where translators can communicate with people. Some booths are designed to simply be a “home base” for translators and their control units for large audiences. Others are designed for a translator to communicate to one other person who is also sitting in the booth with them. There are full-size booths and tabletop booths, depending on your needs.Be sure that you are renting your translation equipment from a dependable and reputable company who offers quality equipment. The quality of your equipment is a big factor in your audience’s experience. Talk to a trusted service near you and ask them about prices, policies, and equipment.

As increase in digital music sales slows, record labels look to new ways to make money

Tuesday, August 31, 2010

Every September, the Apple iPod is redesigned. Last year saw the release of the iPod Nano 5th generation, bringing a video camera and a large range of colours to the Nano for the first time. But as Apple again prepares to unveil a redesigned product, the company has released their quarterly sales figures—and revealed that they have sold only 9m iPods for the quarter to June—the lowest number of sales since 2006, leading industry anylists to ponder whether the world’s most successful music device is in decline.

Such a drop in sales is not a problem for Apple, since the iPhone 4 and the iPad are selling in high numbers. But the number of people buying digital music players are concerning the music industry. Charles Arthur, technology editor of The Guardian, wrote that the decline in sales of MP3 players was a “problem” for record companies, saying that “digital music sales are only growing as fast as those of Apple’s devices – and as the stand-alone digital music player starts to die off, people may lose interest in buying songs from digital stores. The music industry had looked to the iPod to drive people to buy music in download form, whether from Apple’s iTunes music store, eMusic, Napster or from newer competitors such as Amazon.”

Mark Mulligan, a music and digital media analyst at Forrester Research, said in an interview that “at a time where we’re asking if digital is a replacement for the CD, as the CD was for vinyl, we should be starting to see a hockey-stick growth in download sales. Instead, we’re seeing a curve resembling that of a niche technology.” Alex Jacob, a spokesperson for the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry, which represents the worldwide music industry, agreed that there had been a fall in digital sales of music. “The digital download market is still growing,” they said. “But the percentage is less than a few years ago, though it’s now coming from a higher base.” Figures released earlier this year, Arthur wrote, “show that while CD sales fell by 12.7%, losing $1.6bn (£1bn)in value, digital downloads only grew by 9.2%, gaining less than $400m in value.”

Expectations that CDs would, in time, become extinct, replaced by digital downloads, have not come to light, Jacob confirmed. “Across the board, in terms of growth, digital isn’t making up for the fall in CD sales, though it is in certain countries, including the UK,” he said. Anylising the situation, Arthur suggested that “as iPod sales slow, digital music sales, which have been yoked to the device, are likely to slow too. The iPod has been the key driver: the IFPI’s figures show no appreciable digital download sales until 2004, the year Apple launched its iTunes music store internationally (it launched it in the US in April 2003). Since then, international digital music sales have climbed steadily, exactly in line with the total sales of iPods and iPhones.”

Nick Farrell, a TechEYE journalist, stated that the reason for the decline in music sales could be attributed to record companies’ continued reliance on Steve Jobs, CEO of Apple, saying that they had considered him the “industry’s saviour”, and by having this mindset had forgotten “that the iPod is only for those who want their music on the run. What they should have been doing is working out how to get high quality music onto other formats, perhaps even HiFi before the iPlod fad died out.”

HAVE YOUR SAY
Have you found that you are spending less on music and more on apps, e-books, or television shows?
Add or view comments

When Jobs negotiated a deal with record labels to ensure every track was sold for 99 cents, they considered this unimportant—the iPod was not a major source of revenue for the company. However, near the end of 2004, there was a boom in sales of the iPod, and the iTunes store suddenly began raking in more and more money. The record companies were irritated, now wanting to charge different amounts for old and new songs, and popular and less popular songs. “But there was no alternative outlet with which to threaten Apple, which gained an effective monopoly over the digital music player market, achieving a share of more than 70%” wrote Arthur. Some did attempt to challenge the iTunes store, but still none have succeeded. “Apple is now the largest single retailer of music in the US by volume, with a 25% share.”

The iTunes store now sells television shows and films, and the company has recently launced iBooks, a new e-book store. The App Store is hugely successful, with Apple earning $410m in two years soley from Apps, sales of which they get 30%. In two years, 5bn apps have been downloaded—while in seven years, 10bn songs have been purchased. Mulligan thinks that there is a reason for this—the quality of apps simply does not match up to a piece of music. “You can download a song from iTunes to your iPhone or iPad, but at the moment music in that form doesn’t play to the strengths of the device. Just playing a track isn’t enough.”

Adam Liversage, a spokesperson of the British Phonographic Industry, which represents the major UK record labels, notes that the rise of streaming services such as Spotify may be a culprit in the fall in music sales. Revenues from such companies added up to $800m in 2009. Arthur feels that “again, it doesn’t make up for the fall in CD sales, but increasingly it looks like nothing ever will; that the record business’s richest years are behind it. Yet there are still rays of hope. If Apple – and every other mobile phone maker – are moving to an app-based economy, where you pay to download games or timetables, why shouldn’t recording artists do the same?”

Well, apparently they are. British singer Peter Gabriel has released a ‘Full Moon Club’ app, which is updated every month with a new song. Arthur also notes that “the Canadian rock band Rush has an app, and the industrial rock band Nine Inch Nails, led by Trent Reznor – who has been critical of the music industry for bureaucracy and inertia – released the band’s first app in April 2009.” It is thought that such a system will be an effective method to reduce online piracy—”apps tend to be tied to a particular handset or buyer, making them more difficult to pirate than a CD”, he says—and in the music industry, piracy is a very big problem. In 2008, the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry estimated that 95% of downloads were illegitimate. If musicians can increase sales and decrease piracy, Robert says, it can only be a good thing.

“It’s early days for apps in the music business, but we are seeing labels and artists experimenting with it,” Jacob said. “You could see that apps could have a premium offering, or behind-the-scenes footage, or special offers on tickets. But I think it’s a bit premature to predict the death of the album.” Robert concluded by saying that it could be “premature to predict the death of the iPod just yet too – but it’s unlikely that even Steve Jobs will be able to produce anything that will revive it. And that means that little more than five years after the music industry thought it had found a saviour in the little device, it is having to look around again for a new stepping stone to growth – if, that is, one exists.”
