Barleans Fish Oil Offers Strong Defense Against Ailments}

Submitted by: Mannujoues Mannujoues

Proponents of conventional and alternative medicines rarely agree on much, but when it comes to the health benefits attributed to consumption of Omega-3 fatty acids, the two come to a general consensus. Whether it be heart disease, breast cancer, prostate cancer, or diabetes, supplementing high-quality fish oil into your diet allows you to be pro-active in guarding yourself against a plethora of ailments.

Omega-3: Your Daily Rx

According to the Mayo Clinic, there has been conclusive evidence from a number of studies supporting the intake of recommended amounts of DHA (Docosahexaenoic acid) and EPA (Eicosapentaenoic acid) in the form of dietary fish or fish oil supplements. Fish oil is not the only source of nutrient-rich DHA and EPA. Flaxseed and flaxseed oil contain high levels of dietary fiber, including lignans, micronutrients, and alpha-Linolenic acid (ALA). ALA, specifically can be converted by the body into DHA and EPA omega-3 acids, which are a host to a number of health benefits, including regulation of blood-sugar levels, lowered cholesterol, and defense against prostate and breast cancers.

Recent analysis conducted by the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle studied more than 35,000 women over a six-month period yielded results that are aligned with these findings. They found that women taking fish oil supplements were 32 percent less likely to contract invasive ductal carcinoma, the most common type of breast cancer.

A Balanced Diet for a Healthy Heart

When further examining the effects of omega-3 on the body, fish oil is positively correlated with cardiovascular diseases. It appears to decrease the risks of arrhythmia (irregular heart beat), stroke, and high blood pressure. Additionally, fish oil is known to lower the level of blood fat, triglyceride, and has a healthy effect on levels of high-density lipoprotein (HDL), or good cholesterol. Mono and polyunsaturated fats found in fish oil and flax oil, can help lower our LDL (bad) cholesterol, a major culprit in heart disease, and improve overall health. Foods that contain these fats are packed with anti-oxidants, and these foods help the heart, joints, nerves, and bones, as well as promote healthy brain development and function.

Fish Oil Reduces Risk of Breast and Prostate Cancers

Fish oil supplements have been found to decrease a womans risk of developing breast cancer, according to a recent study published in Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention. Those who regularly used fish-oil supplements were one-third less likely to get breast cancer. The study polled more than 35,000 post-menopausal women ages 50 to 76. Researchers found that after controlling for other breast cancer risk factors – such as age, weight, alcohol consumption and physical fitness – the women were still at a lower risk of getting breast cancer in the six years after the study began if they took fish oil supplements.

The cancer-preventing effects of fish oil are not only limited to women. Studies done by Augestsson, et al. have observed more than 47,000 men within the span of twelve years. Their findings have concluded that while fish consumption tended to reduce the overall prostate cancer risk, the most dramatic impact was on metastatic prostate cancer risk. They observed that for each 500 mg increase in daily fish oil consumption, there was a 24 percent reduction for the risk of prostate cancer. Similar studies have yielded an inverse relationship between fish oil consumption and the development of prostate cancer.

Supplementing Fish Oil Into Your Diet

When selecting omega-3 supplements, choose only the best products to reap the most benefits from your fish and flax oil. Barleans has an upstanding reputation for quality organic oils and oil blends. They use only the finest ingredients for an unparalleled and superior line of products to provide you with essential fatty acids for optimal health. Scientists say excess cerebrospinal fluid may serve as early sign of autism

Thursday, March 9, 2017

In a study that appeared on Monday in Biological Psychiatry, scientists from the Universities of California and North Carolina, with several other universities in the United States and Canada, report a strong correlation between abnormal distribution of cerebrospinal fluid in infants and later development of autistic symptoms.

“The more extra-axial CSF present at six months, the more severe the autism symptoms when the kids were diagnosed at 24 months of age,” said first author Dr. Mark Shen, a postdoctoral fellow at the University of North Carolina.

The study covered 343 children examined aged six months, twelve months, and twenty-four months, 221 of whom had older siblings with autism. Children with higher than usual volumes of cerebrospinal fluid in the subarachnoid space — the area just around the brain — were more likely to be diagnosed with autism later in life, with a strong correlation in the high-risk group. Ultimately, cerebrospinal volume was able to provide an early diagnosis of probably ASD in high-risk children with 70% accuracy. The six-month-old babies who later went on to a diagnosis of autism had an average of 18% more CSF by volume than those who were not so diagnosed. This built on the findings of a 2013 study that covered only 55 children.

Researchers said it is not clear whether a large amount of cerebrospinal fluid actually causes autism or not. While studies have shown that cerebrospinal fluid, once thought to act solely as a cushioner and shock absorber for the brain, can influence the way neurons grow, Shen speculated that the large amount of fluid may itself be a symptom: “We believe that extra-axial CSF is an early sign that CSF is not filtering and draining when it should. The result is that there could be a buildup of neuro-inflammation that isn’t being washed [a]way.”

Currently, coauthor David Amaral said, children are not diagnosed with autism spectrum disorders until they are old enough for their behavior to change, usually at two or three years old. Researchers said these findings could be used to develop an early diagnostic system usable when the patient is as young as six months old.

Photoessay: The Idiotarod: When Good Shopping Carts Go Bad

Wednesday, March 15, 2006

Washington, D.C. —When you mix a shopping cart, six team members, bar hopping and bonus points for schmoozing bar hostesses and sabotaging your enemies, you get the annual Washington, D.C. Idiotarod race. On Saturday, this bizarre fund raising event, which originated in San Francisco 13 years ago, pitted teams of “sleds” together to race from bar to bar in Washington, D.C.’s fashionable Dupont Circle and Adams Morgan neighborhoods. Each “sled” consists of a “borrowed” shopping cart and six human dogs to pull the cart. Points are given for originality, the best time and best sabotage of another sled.

The race is held to benefit the Arlington Food Assistance Center and is organized by Ellen Shortill and Kristen Heatherly. Their organization, called “SMASHED” or “Society for Mature Adults Seeking to Help, Entertain and Donate”, takes the position that donating small amounts many times ultimately benefits the smaller charities. Said Shortill, “Our goal is simply to have fun and raise money for those charities that don’t really get any attention.”

The race this year consisted of 22 teams. Although team “Save NOLA” got to the last bar first, teams can win bonus points for (among other things) flirting with bar hosts and hostesses at any of the five bars along the route. The route is approximately 3 miles long, and each team is required to spend at least 20 minutes in each bar. Heatherly noted that “it doesn’t matter who got here first, ultimately its the team with the most credits and the best time that wins.”

Unique among the participants are brothers Pete and Chris Magnuson who are attempting to get on the 10th edition of Amazing Race on CBS. Their team called “Pick Pete and Chris” ran through the streets with t-shirts hawking their website and their fervent desire to be chosen for the next edition of the television show.

“Its not really about who wins, its that we get to have a blast and raise some money,” said Shortill. The charity event raised about $500 and various canned goods for the food pantry.

Modular House Floor Plan Getting The Most Value From Your Housing Dollar

By Rebecca Welch

Modular house floor plans are designed with consumers in mind and can be considered some of the best designs around. Modular house floor plans have distinct advantages over other types of floor plans in terms of design freedom and ease of construction.

Modular house floor plans may be assembled in an almost endless variety of composition due to the use of pre-constructed segments and because of the pre-constructed segments, construction time is shorter than for more conventional types of housing.

Modular housing segments are built in a factory then delivered to the resedential construction site. A completed modular home looks no different from a more conventionally built home and does not look like a mobile home or trailer.

Here are some of the advantages that modular house floor plans have over other types of housing.

1. Home loan lenders will allow you to obtain a standard mortgage just as if it were a conventionally built home.

2. Modular house floor plans are designed to last just as long as a conventional home. A well built home with high construction standards will provide years of comfortable living with lower maintenance costs over time.

3. Your main concern is having the proper type of foundation in place accurately according to your house floor plan specifications.

4. Modular house floor plans are easily adjusted or modified to your family’s needs. This is particularly helpful if you have housing requirements that must be met.

5. Modular house floor plans are designed to make the most of your housing dollar. These house floor plans are both cost-effective and energy-efficient.

6. Since construction of modular house floor plans is faster than conventionally built homes, this means that you and your family can begin enjoying your new home much sooner.

Modular house floor plans are designed with attention to detail and craftmanship just as any other home design. The high quality, durable materials used result in a cost effectiveness

and energy savings. Modular house floor plans are a great way to get the most value from your housing dollar.

An amphibious vehicle belonging to the United States Marines capsized and sank to the floor of the Del Mar boat basin, California at 1130 PST (1930 UTC) resulting in one death and three injures.

Three instructors and three students were conducting driver training when the vehicle capsized and sank, trapping them inside. Oxygen was being pumped into the vehicle for hours in an attempt to keep the Marine alive.

Captain Daniel J. Thomas revealed that “There will be a thorough investigation into this mishap that occurred.” He continued, “[there will be] reports that come, lessons learned in terms of preventing anything like this from happening.” Major Thomas said that training would not be stopped, but “We’re going to take a look at this and the commander will then make a decision before anything goes back into place to make sure any safety briefing that need to be given are conducted.”

The identity of the dead Marine has not yet been revealed; the family have yet to have been notified.
