Congressional panel concludes Gulf War Syndrome a legitimate condition

Thursday, December 4, 2008

A study by the United States Department of Veterans Affairs presented to a Congressional panel on November 17, has confirmed that Gulf War Syndrome is a legitimate illness contracted by soldiers who took pyridostigmine bromide pills in order to counter the effects of nerve gas during the First Gulf War in Iraq. Several other factors likely contributed to Gulf War Syndrome, including excessive exposure to pesticides, mainly Permethrin and DEET, and chemical weapons residue caused by the American demolition of the Iraqi munitions depot in Khamisiyah.

The report estimates that about 1 out of every 4 veterans of the Gulf War are affected by this illness; this could mean anywhere between 175,000 and 210,000 soldiers are affected by the syndrome. The report also concluded that veterans exposed to the toxins spread by the destruction of the munitions depot have died of brain cancer at double the rate of other Gulf War veterans. Other problems associated with the condition are: fatigue, headaches, joint pain, rashes, breathing difficulty, forgetfulness, circulation problems, and cardiac troubles.

Gulf War Syndrome has been the focal point of veterans rights groups since the illness first became noticed in the early 1990s. The United States and British governments claimed that the illness was merely psychological trauma from war misinterpreted as an illness, and veterans could not receive medical coverage for the illness.

“I feel vindicated, but I’m angry. This is so long overdue,” said Denise Nichols, an advocate for veterans’ rights and a nurse who served during Operation Desert Storm. The National Gulf Veterans and Families Association (NGVFA) said that many veterans committed suicide after learning that the government did not recognize their illness as real.

Tutored Sat Classes Can Dramatically Improve Your Test Scores

byAlma Abell

You can find tutoring in the following subjects:

*Physics (all levels)

*English (all levels)

*Chemistry (all levels)

*Biology (all levels)

*History (all levels)

*Computer science (all levels)

*Spanish (all levels)

*Math (all levels including AP)

All college bound students should set study goals and also schedule testing in ACT, SAT and PSAT exams during both their Junior and Senior years. By taking tutoring of SAT classes and PSAT classes, a student has a chance to honestly assess their strengths and weaknesses. The PSAT scores are a very good predictor of what your SAT performance will be, so you should make good use of the available data. All you have to do is add a zero to the end of your PSAT score to get the approximate SAT score and that is very useful information.

Students should realize that these are not cram tests. Unlike the regular tests you take in school, these tests don’t require you to store vast amounts of information in short-term memory. They are critical reasoning tests that give you better rewards for methodical preparation and strategic approaches to preparing. Goal achieving gurus know that you achieve your goals better by making a little progress daily until it becomes a habit to you. The ACT is faster paced and more straightforward than the SAT. Most students have similar scores on both tests but some students do much better when taking the ACT. Most colleges accept both the ACT and the SAT for Admission purposes. Just remember that you don’t need a practice test everyday. Doing a few math problems or reviewing groups of about 20 vocabulary words will eventually make a bigger difference.

UK Chancellor of the Exchequer makes 2005 Budget speech

Wednesday, March 16, 2005

The United Kingdom Chancellor of the Exchequer, the Right Honourable Gordon Brown PC MP, in a speech to the British House of Commons today presented his ninth Budget, what is very likely to be his last Budget before the next UK General Election. This opened the parliamentary debate on the 2005 Finance Bill, and was followed by responses from the opposition parties.

In a 48 minute long speech, the Chancellor presented a Budget of “tax cuts that are reasonable, spending that is affordable, and [economic] stability that is paramount”, that was “the prudent course for Britain”. There were few surprises that had not already been indicated in his 2004 pre-Budget report. The increase in the threshold on stamp duty was greater than that forecast by commentators, as was the amount of the Council Tax rebate to households with pensioners.

Original Story
  • “Hotel development proposal could displace Buffalo, NY business owners” — Wikinews, February 17, 2006

Friday, March 10, 2006

Buffalo, New York —The Common Council of Buffalo voted on Tuesday to send the Elmwood Village Hotel proposal “to committee for further discussion”, after citing the need for more public involvement.

The Elmwood Village Hotel is a development proposal by the Savarino Construction Services Corporation, a project designed by the architect Karl Frizlen of The Frizlen Group. The hotel would be placed on the southeast corner of Elmwood and Forest Avenues in Buffalo.

To make way for the project, at least five buildings located at 1109 to 1121 Elmwood Ave would be demolished. At least two properties on Forest Avenue could also be demolished. The Elmwood properties, according to Eva Hassett, Vice President of Savarion Construction, are “under contract”, but it is unclear if Savarino Construction actually owns the Elmwood properties. Hans Mobius, a former mayorial candidate, is still believed to be the current owner the properties. Mobius also owns 607 Forest Avenue.

The properties 605 and 607 Forest Avenue could also be included in the proposal according to Hassett.

“We would use a Special Development Plan to rezone 1119-1121 Elmwood and 605 Forest to a C-2 zoning category,” stated Hassett. It is possible that Savarino Construction may try to obtain a variance for 605 Forest, which would allow them to enforce eminent domain, should the hotel be allowed to go forward.

The building at 607 Forest was also discussed to be rezoned, but it is unclear what the plans would be for that property. During the February 28 Common Council meeting, Hassett stated that the properties 605 and 607 were “now off the agenda”.

Pano Georgiadis, owner of Pano’s Restaurant at 1081 Elmwood, owns the property at 605 Forest and attended Tuesday’s Common Council meeting.

“Having a hotel is a bright idea. We all love the idea of a hotel, but the way that it is presented, is wishful thinking. This hotel does not fit. It’s like putting two gallons of water in a gallon jug, it does not fit. At the last meeting, the architect admitted that they are planning to put the undergound parking lot and the hotel, right at the property line. If I open my window, I will be able to touch the wall, that goes fifty feet high”, said Georgiadis.

“There is a problem having a seventy-two room hotel and fifty-five parking spaces. That means that all the other cars will spill all over the neighborhood. The footprint is simply too small. If you have a bigger [parking] lot, and a smaller hotel, I will welcome a hotel. I have a parking lot at my own business, and I am chasing people all day long. Remember, the city says it has ‘zero tolerance [for illegal parking]’. Try telling that to the guy from Albany who came to see his kids, that are going to Buffalo State, who would get tickets totaling over a hundred dollars”, added Georgiadis.

The city’s Planning Board is scheduled to meet on March 14, 2006 at 9:00 a.m. about the proposal. Although a discussion will take place, no vote is expected to be taken.

At the moment, none of the properties are zoned for a hotel. Savarino Construction plans on asking for a C2 zoning permit. If that does not work, they plan to implement a new zoning plan called a “special development plan” which would allow for only a hotel on the site. That zone would not be able to be changed.

“This [project] justifies Mobius’s refusal to invest in any maitenance[sic] or improvements”, on the properties said Clarence Carnahan, a local resident. “Where were the Council persons over the years? Where were the city inspectors over the years, to make sure that he maintained and improved his properties? The government was supposed to be protecting, not being preditorial. I see a predatorial issue here when it comes to this hotel. Over the years: Why has the local government been disfunctional when it came to Mobius’s properties? Refusal to invest in improvements, doesn’t that sound like a slumlord? Maybe I am missing a point here, but what kind of messages does this send to other slumlords that havn’t[sic] been jailed or fined? It’s [the hotel] trying to be pushed through.”

Carnahan also presented signs for residents and or business owners who are opposed to the hotel, that could be placed in windows or on stakes in the yard. Some of the signs said, ‘No tell hotel’, ‘Hans off, no hotel’, ‘It takes more than a hotel to make a village’. and ‘Keep Elmwood free, no hotel’. Carnahan plans on making more signs for a protest to be held on Saturday March 18, at 2:00 p.m. (EST) on Elmwood and Forest. Some signs were given to individuals after the meeting.

“First things first, Hans is the problem, and I don’t think it has been addressed. Let’s roll back the clock on this project. What can we do with Hans? There is such thing as eminent domain, which could be of greater interest to the community, to seize the property at its lowest assessed value”, said Nancy Pollina, co-owner of Don Apparel with Patty Morris at 1119 Elmwood. “There are so many ideas that have not been explored and we are about to give this parcel away, to a big developer.”

Mobius has not returned any calls by Wikinews regarding the situation.

A freelance journalist writing for Wikinews has obtained a letter, exclusively, addressed to one of the five business owners from Hans Mobius stating:

There is a proposal to develop my property which you are currently renting. Because of opposition to this development, it does not look like it will happen. I will let you know if there any changes.

Despite the letter, there have been no plans or decisions made to end the proposal.

To date, none of the business owners or residents of 1119-1121 Elmwood have received an eviction notice.

Business owners and residents gave an indication of what they would like to see happen at the corner; a project similar to one done locally last year. There, developers renovated two buildings on Auburn and Elmwood Avenues, merging the buildings into one thus allowing for more shop space. Among some of the shops to move in after the development were Cone Five Pottery, The Ruby Slipper, and Abraham’s Jewelers. Prior to the renovation work, the left building in the picture was boarded up for several years. Many of the concerned locals would like to see a similar development on Forest and Elmwood.

Rocco Termini, a developer in Buffalo, proposed a similar design at the February 28 community meeting

In an interview after the February 28 meeting, Termini stated, “I will be willing to take a look at this myself, or I would be more than happy to be partners with Sam, Sam Savarino”, who is President and Chief Executive Officer of Savarino Construction Services Corp.

So far Savarino Construction has no plans to team up with Termini.

The Advantages Of Completing An Mbbs Abroad

byAlma Abell

It can be very challenging for students to gain admissions to medical schools in India. For many students and families, a better option is to consider completing an MBBS abroad.

The MCI, the Medical Council of India, must approve any medical school that an Indian student wishes to attend if he or she wants to practice medicine in India after graduation. MCI has approved universities and colleges in many different countries to allow India students that meet the criteria of the school and that are accepted to earn their MBBS abroad.

While students can study in Russia, China, the Ukraine, Poland, Australia as well as many other countries around the world, these are some definite advantages in completing your study in an American University. This includes universities in the West Indies, which offer beautiful, safe and state-of-the-art campuses and accommodations as well as a lower cost of attending a continental American medical school.

See a New Country

One of the reasons that students may choose the West Indies as their destination to complete their MBBS abroad is the difference in the Caribbean from India. On the island of St. Lucia, for example, students will have a range of opportunities throughout the school year to explore, see and try new activities and to enjoy this island paradise.

Study Under Highly Recognized Faculty

For many students, choosing an international location to complete their MBBS allows for training and study under some of the most recognized doctors and researchers in the world.

American universities and colleges often have guest speakers, guest lecturers, and even faculty members that are highly experienced and experts in their own area of medical expertise. This can provide insight and help students to develop a focus for their own careers as doctors. Go to website for more information.

Valuable paintings stolen from Greek gallery

Thursday, January 12, 2012

Art thieves in Greece broke into the Athens National Gallery on Monday and stole three valuable works of art.

Among them was a painting by famous Spanish painter Pablo Picasso, dated 1939, called Woman’s Head which was a gift to the Greek people for their resistance to the Nazis during World War 2. The other two works were Mill by Piet Mondrian and a sketch of St. Diego de Alcala by Guglielmo Caccia. A fourth painting, Landscape, also by Piet Mondrian was dropped by the thieves when pursued by security. All three works stolen were stripped from their frames.

The police stated multiple alarms during the evening of the heist in other parts of the building had distracted the gallery guard. Investigating yet another alarm, he saw the shadow of a fleeing individual. Citizen’s Protection Minister Christos Papoutsis apologized for the loss, citing that the security at the gallery was “non-existent”.

The value of the works stolen was not yet determined by gallery officials. The artwork in question was on display at the gallery as part of an exhibition called “Unknown Treasures”, including works of Albrecht Durer and Rembrandt.

Jury convicts Murdoch of outback murder

Wednesday, December 14, 2005A jury has delivered a unanimous guilty verdict in the Darwin trial of the man charged with the murder of missing British backpacker Peter Falconio.

It took the jury more than eight hours to reach a verdict. 47-year-old Broome mechanic, Bradley John Murdoch, has also been found guilty of the assault and deprivation of liberty of Mr Falconio’s girlfriend Joanne Lees. Mr Falconio’s body has never been found.

Murdoch flagged down Mr Falconio and Ms Lees on a remote Central Australian highway in July 14, 2001. He then shot Mr Falconio and bound Ms Lees with cable ties and threatened her with a gun.

Telling jurors that he “entirely agreed” with their verdict, Chief Justice Brian Martin sentenced Murdoch to a mandatory life sentence. Murdoch’s defence lawyer, Grant Algie, indicated an appeal would be lodged against the conviction. “Obviously we are disappointed with the result,” he said.

Outside court, Ms Lees said she hoped Murdoch would tell her and Falconio’s family the location of her partner’s body. “Today marks an intense period of distress for myself and the Falconio family. This will enable us to take another step (forward),” she said.

The eight-week trial heard from 85 witnesses and had more than 300 exhibits tendered. The court heard that Mr Falconio and Ms Lees were travelling around Australia when they were flagged down by Murdoch. Murdoch told them he saw sparks coming out of the exhaust of the couple’s orange Kombi van and took Mr Falconio to the back of the vehicle to show him. Ms Lees heard a gunshot before Murdoch bound her hands with a pair of cable ties. She managed to escape the van, and hid in bushes for hours until she flagged down a road train.

DNA matching Murdoch’s was found on the T-shirt Ms Lees was wearing when she was found. The court heard it was 150 quadrillion times more likely to match the DNA of Murdoch than any other person in the Northern Territory. Matching DNA was also found on the gear stick of the van and inside the cable ties.

In his defence, Murdoch claimed he had nothing to do with the crime. He admitted to the fact he was a drug-runner, detailing numerous trips across Australia. His former drug-running partner also gave evidence, saying he believed Murdoch was filmed at a truckstop after Mr Falconio was murdered.

Murdoch has been in prison since August 2002. He was arrested in Port Augusta over the abduction and rape of two women in South Australia. He was acquitted of those charges, but immediately arrested over the Falconio case.

Why Do Socialists Sabotage Education?

Submitted by: Bruce Deitrick Price

Summary: Socialists tend to believe in grandiose social engineering plans. Students who know too much, citizens who can think for themselves, tend to be a problem. What s the answer? Talk a lot about education; but make sure nobody has much of it.

————

All the way back in 1848 (the year Karl Marx published his Manifesto), Alexis de Tocqueville captured the essence of socialism in this short paragraph:

Democracy extends the sphere of personal independence; socialism confines it. Democracy values each man at his highest; socialism makes of each man an agent, an instrument, a number. Democracy and socialism have but one thing in common equality. But note well the difference. Democracy aims at equality in liberty. Socialism desires equality in constraint and in servitude.

I don t know how this Frenchman got so smart, but I m comfortable with saying he wrote the book– in only 57 words — on this complex subject.

The key phrase is: a number. Socialism s big promise is to turn you into a tiny cog in a huge machine. Nominally you re a comrade; in reality you ll be a serf or a slave. So socialism s brave new world turns out to be filled with constraint and servitude. Are there people somewhere yearning for this?

[youtube]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q78j9WmvoKo[/youtube]

Once you strip away the rhetoric and slogans, socialism is promising dirt. Who would willingly participate in this stupid project? Short answer: very few.

Long answer: very few who haven t first been indoctrinated, frightened, lied to, or otherwise tricked into believing that less is more.

You might be already ahead of me. It s easy to see now why progressive educators starting with Dewey circa 1900, George Counts and Harold Rugg in the 1930s, and all the rest of this gang to the present, ended up in the unsavory business of teaching less and less in order to prepare kids for socialism.

These so-called educators discovered a simple formula: the more people know, the more resistance they put up. (Values, traditions, history, religion, knowledge of whatever kind–these are the enemy.) Conversely, the less people know, the more easily they can be seduced into surrendering their freedom. Clearly, our progressive educators started from these nihilistic premises, and aimed for near-zero content in the schools.

You can look at everything Dewey said, all the way up to this year s latest pronouncements on Constructivism, 21st-Century Skills and Authentic Assessment. You will find this perennial motif: kids don t need all that factual stuff; teach less.

I m reading a book about progressive education in the 1930s and 1940s; and it s remarkable how relentless these fanatics were. The perfect school would be one devoted entirely to busy-work. Anything resembling a shred of foundational knowledge was sneered at.

The second part of the two-punch combination is to make sure that whatever is still taught is taught in a confused and incoherent way. That, for example, is a perfect short definition of New Math and Reform Math. The teachers go through the motions of teaching arithmetic; but few can do arithmetic. Similarly, with Whole Word, teachers can imagine that they teach reading; but few kids become fluent readers.

You see the pattern. There are classrooms, teachers, students, books, tests, grades–the whole panorama of things that might make you think you were looking at a school. You re not looking at a school. It s a laboratory for churning out humans who know very little and will therefore settle for very little.

I m never sure whether to characterize these socialist educators as criminals or pipsqueaks. (Those mainly trying to help Russia win the Cold War were traitors.) In any case, they were horribly destructive. They worked systematically, with a great deal of intelligence and effort over many years, to make the schools as dumb as possible, in order to produce empty-headed, passive kids ready for socialism.

The good news is, schools did not one day get stupid all by themselves. Our faux-educators worked tirelessly at dumbing education down. Question: why can t we do the opposite?

Our best revenge now is to see progressive/liberal educational thinking for what it is–non-education masquerading as education. Second, let s clinically examine each idea they concocted (Whole Word, Reform Math, No Memorization, Self Esteem, and 50 others); carefully deconstruct these gimmicks; and confront why socialist ideologues would come up with such counter-productive methods. For these people, an idea was good to the extent that it impeded education.

I m trying to describe what happened to our country so that we can undo the damage. Here s how we start the healing process: understand the true goals of the education commissars, and that their unhelpful ideas were not about education at all, not as parents understand the term, but about social engineering.

Basically, progressives had one trick: putting sugar in the country s gas tank.

Here s a happy thought. If public schools simply went back to what was considered common-sensical and ordinary in, say, 1930, coupled with a clever use of all the new digital tools, I bet we could double the educational horsepower of the typical American school.

Now, to recapitulate, why do socialists hate education? Simple. It s in the way.

Body of missing teenager Amber Dubois found

Monday, March 8, 2010

The skeletal remains of 14-year-old Escondido, California teenager Amber Dubois were found north of the Pala Indian Reservation Saturday morning, police said. Dubois disappeared February 13, 2009 while walking to Escondido High School. The San Diego County Medical Examiner’s office made a positive identification through dental records.

According to Escondido Police Chief Jim Maher, police were following a lead when they came across the remains. Maher declined to say what the lead was or to describe in detail the site where the remains were found. He also refused to reveal whether John Albert Gardner III, suspect in the murder of Chelsea King, is being linked to the Dubois case.

Amber’s father, Maurice Dubois, made a statement thanking those who had helped in the search for Amber. “The entire community, everybody who helped out with the search effort, and above all our huge volunteer corps, they are the most dedicated people and without them we couldn’t have done anything,” he said.
