Why Do Socialists Sabotage Education?

Submitted by: Bruce Deitrick Price

Summary: Socialists tend to believe in grandiose social engineering plans. Students who know too much, citizens who can think for themselves, tend to be a problem. What s the answer? Talk a lot about education; but make sure nobody has much of it.

————

All the way back in 1848 (the year Karl Marx published his Manifesto), Alexis de Tocqueville captured the essence of socialism in this short paragraph:

Democracy extends the sphere of personal independence; socialism confines it. Democracy values each man at his highest; socialism makes of each man an agent, an instrument, a number. Democracy and socialism have but one thing in common equality. But note well the difference. Democracy aims at equality in liberty. Socialism desires equality in constraint and in servitude.

I don t know how this Frenchman got so smart, but I m comfortable with saying he wrote the book– in only 57 words — on this complex subject.

The key phrase is: a number. Socialism s big promise is to turn you into a tiny cog in a huge machine. Nominally you re a comrade; in reality you ll be a serf or a slave. So socialism s brave new world turns out to be filled with constraint and servitude. Are there people somewhere yearning for this?

Once you strip away the rhetoric and slogans, socialism is promising dirt. Who would willingly participate in this stupid project? Short answer: very few.

Long answer: very few who haven t first been indoctrinated, frightened, lied to, or otherwise tricked into believing that less is more.

You might be already ahead of me. It s easy to see now why progressive educators starting with Dewey circa 1900, George Counts and Harold Rugg in the 1930s, and all the rest of this gang to the present, ended up in the unsavory business of teaching less and less in order to prepare kids for socialism.

These so-called educators discovered a simple formula: the more people know, the more resistance they put up. (Values, traditions, history, religion, knowledge of whatever kind–these are the enemy.) Conversely, the less people know, the more easily they can be seduced into surrendering their freedom. Clearly, our progressive educators started from these nihilistic premises, and aimed for near-zero content in the schools.

You can look at everything Dewey said, all the way up to this year s latest pronouncements on Constructivism, 21st-Century Skills and Authentic Assessment. You will find this perennial motif: kids don t need all that factual stuff; teach less.

I m reading a book about progressive education in the 1930s and 1940s; and it s remarkable how relentless these fanatics were. The perfect school would be one devoted entirely to busy-work. Anything resembling a shred of foundational knowledge was sneered at.

The second part of the two-punch combination is to make sure that whatever is still taught is taught in a confused and incoherent way. That, for example, is a perfect short definition of New Math and Reform Math. The teachers go through the motions of teaching arithmetic; but few can do arithmetic. Similarly, with Whole Word, teachers can imagine that they teach reading; but few kids become fluent readers.

You see the pattern. There are classrooms, teachers, students, books, tests, grades–the whole panorama of things that might make you think you were looking at a school. You re not looking at a school. It s a laboratory for churning out humans who know very little and will therefore settle for very little.

I m never sure whether to characterize these socialist educators as criminals or pipsqueaks. (Those mainly trying to help Russia win the Cold War were traitors.) In any case, they were horribly destructive. They worked systematically, with a great deal of intelligence and effort over many years, to make the schools as dumb as possible, in order to produce empty-headed, passive kids ready for socialism.

The good news is, schools did not one day get stupid all by themselves. Our faux-educators worked tirelessly at dumbing education down. Question: why can t we do the opposite?

Our best revenge now is to see progressive/liberal educational thinking for what it is–non-education masquerading as education. Second, let s clinically examine each idea they concocted (Whole Word, Reform Math, No Memorization, Self Esteem, and 50 others); carefully deconstruct these gimmicks; and confront why socialist ideologues would come up with such counter-productive methods. For these people, an idea was good to the extent that it impeded education.

I m trying to describe what happened to our country so that we can undo the damage. Here s how we start the healing process: understand the true goals of the education commissars, and that their unhelpful ideas were not about education at all, not as parents understand the term, but about social engineering.

Basically, progressives had one trick: putting sugar in the country s gas tank.

Here s a happy thought. If public schools simply went back to what was considered common-sensical and ordinary in, say, 1930, coupled with a clever use of all the new digital tools, I bet we could double the educational horsepower of the typical American school.

Now, to recapitulate, why do socialists hate education? Simple. It s in the way.

Body of missing teenager Amber Dubois found

Monday, March 8, 2010

The skeletal remains of 14-year-old Escondido, California teenager Amber Dubois were found north of the Pala Indian Reservation Saturday morning, police said. Dubois disappeared February 13, 2009 while walking to Escondido High School. The San Diego County Medical Examiner’s office made a positive identification through dental records.

According to Escondido Police Chief Jim Maher, police were following a lead when they came across the remains. Maher declined to say what the lead was or to describe in detail the site where the remains were found. He also refused to reveal whether John Albert Gardner III, suspect in the murder of Chelsea King, is being linked to the Dubois case.

Amber’s father, Maurice Dubois, made a statement thanking those who had helped in the search for Amber. “The entire community, everybody who helped out with the search effort, and above all our huge volunteer corps, they are the most dedicated people and without them we couldn’t have done anything,” he said.

Wikinews interviews Zahra Stardust about the upcoming by-election in the Bradfield electorate of the Australian parliament

Sunday, November 1, 2009

With two by-elections coming up in Australia, many minor parties and independents will be looking to gain a seat in the House of Representatives. Zahra Stardust (real name Marianna Leishman) is the candidate for the Australian Sex Party.

Wikinews reporter Patrick Gillett held an exclusive interview with Ms Stardust, candidate for the Bradfield electorate.

“In an area that claims 50 years of conservative representation from white, heterosexual, able-bodied, suited, male protagonists, the Australian Sex Party is excited to a provide modern outward looking female candidate with social justice credentials to restore a historical imbalance in the electorate’s policy focus”, the 26 year old human rights advocate, burlesque dancer and trapeze artist said in a press release.

The electorate was vacated by former opposition leader Brenden Nelson.

((Patrick Gillett)) Why do you want to get into parliament? / Why do you represent your party?

I am delighted and thrilled I am to be representing the Australian Sex Party, whose policies on sex, gender, human rights and equality are very close to my heart. We believe that the personal is political, and we’re serious about sex and the way that it directly affects individuals in areas of health, censorship, discrimination, workplace, education and equality.

Rarely do we hear politicians speaking in positive or open-minded terms about issues relating to sex, sexuality and gender. Much rhetoric in Australian politics in fact uses particularly moralising or religious discourses that are governed by heteronormative, patriarchal and hegemonic ideals. Indeed, our party needed an electoral commission ruling that it s’ name was not ‘obscene’. In this climate, we aim to disrupt, expose and eliminate the plethora of taboos and stigmas, shame and isolation around sex, sexuality, and gender, to advocate for wider equality and freedom from harm for all Australians.

((PG)) What would the three main policies you are taking into this by-election be? / How would you address these policies?

We’re proud to announce that the Australian Sex Party has policies in a diverse number of areas. We are concerned about child protection and education- we would like to convene a Royal Commission into child sex abuse in religious institutions, and assist develop global approaches to child pornography, whilst importantly, establishing a national sex education curriculum for children, an internet education scheme for parents, a uniform classification scheme for non-violent erotica, introducing R and X ratings for computer games, and return Internet censorship to parents and individuals.

One of our fundamental concerns is equality – including paid maternity leave, ensuring equal numbers of women in Parliament, legalisation of abortion, enacting more comprehensive federal anti-discrimination laws in line with the Australian Human Rights Commission recommendations, creating total equal rights in all areas of the law for gay, lesbian and transgender people, overturning discriminatory laws in the Northern Territory banning Indigenous people from possessing erotic media, and ensuring the sexual rights of the elderly and people with a disability.

((PG)) Sending asylum seekers to Indonesia: good or bad? / Is the Australian dollar’s near parrity with the UD dollar a sign that the Australian economy is healthy, the US economy in chaos or both? / How do you rate the governments economic stimulus package? / Should it be wound back? / Is Kevin Rudd a better Prime Minister than John Howard? / Is the Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme an effective solution to climate change? Why? / Is there a better solution?

As a party in its infancy who is not yet in the House of Representatives, we are focusing predominantly on niche issues relating to sex and gender, in which we have expertise. We look forward to formulating policies on wider issues in the public discourse such climate change, the economy and refugee issues if and when the occasion arises. Currently we are seeking to raise awareness of important topics that are remain hidden or absent from the public political agenda.

However, we would make the following comments in response to your questions. For a country that prides itself on multiculturalism, we believe that instead of utilizing law and order rhetoric that stigmatises people who have every right under international law to seek asylum, we should see this instance as an opportunity to welcome the incredible cultural diversity asylum seekers can bring to our country, and to open up discussion about the root causes of refugee and immigration movements, such as climate change, civil war, famine and persecution. Despite being elected largely because of their compassion and empathy towards refugees and asylum seekers, Rudd’s ‘hard line’ approach is reminiscent of John Howard’s stance in this area and risks creating a disillusioned public. We urge the Rudd Government to call on Indonesia to sign and ratify the Refugee Convention if it continues to fund detention centres there, and press for asylum seekers to be processed on the mainland with view to Australia being a progressive role model in the international community, as opposed to maintaining its current detention policies which continue to seek attention from human rights bodies worldwide.

((PG)) Why should the electorate vote for you?

There is a lot of lip service paid currently paid by the major political parties to gender equality that is not followed through with substantive policy and law reform. We know that the vast numbers of Australians are tolerant, respectful, celebratory people, with their individual backgrounds, preferences and lives, and we hope to seek resonance with people in Bradfield electorate who care about social justice issues and injustices in areas of health, education, censorship, workplace relations and child protection. We hope to represent people in Bradfield who support the human rights, respect, dignity and equality of all people, no matter what gender, sexual preference, race, class, ability, or any other factor.

I have experience working with the United Nations Population Fund in Eritrea on sexual and reproductive health programs, with UNIFEM Australia on gender, development and discrimination, and with the Kimberley Land Council in the area of Native Title. I have worked at Wirringa Baiya Aboriginal Women’s Legal Centre with victims of sexual assault and domestic violence and campaigned with Amnesty International, Mahboba’s Promise and Oxfam Australia. I am a proud member of the Gay/Lesbian/Bi-sexual/ TIQ community and believe in equal rights for all members of the community.

We urge people to look at our website, which is absolutely overflowing with fabulous information, news articles, media releases, and videos from around the globe. We look forward to meeting with, hearing from and working with members of the Bradfield electorate about their experiences, desires and priorities in these areas and how we can best help make real political and social change, and provide nuanced representation for a beautifully diverse electorate.

Change Your Life With Acupuncture Treatment

byadmin

While people have been practicing acupuncture for centuries, it has just recently become more accepted and mainstream, as doctors are treating patients with neurological, respiratory, and digestive issues without medicine or surgery. As more and more people get help with stress and emotional problems as well, acupuncture treatment will only become more accepted by the medical community and by patients.

Does it Really Work?

Many people ask if acupuncture will really help with their problems, and the answer is yes. People have used acupuncture for two thousand years and the practice is still going strong today. The practice of inserting small needles into acupuncture points will stimulate the person’s nervous system. This releases chemicals that can decrease the pain that the patient is feeling or help the body self-regulate.

Medical or Ordinary Acupuncture

If you are considering acupuncture treatment for a health issue, then you will be faced with making a decision about where you will go for your treatment. While it is possible to go to any home acupuncturist and receive acupuncture treatment, working with an acupuncturist who is trained in Western medicine and acupuncture will give you the best of both treatments. They will be able to intervene medically if necessary, and you can rest assured that they will be monitoring the effects of the acupuncture on your whole body.

Acupuncture can stand alone as a treatment to help you heal from medical problems, or it can be used in combination with other forms of medicine. There are many disorders that can be safely treated with acupuncture, thereby improving the patient’s quality of life. Some issues, such as allergies and pms may seem like a life sentence to live with, but regular acupuncture can help with the symptoms and treat the underlying disorder as well. Visit Robertyoungsacupuncture.com for more information about how acupuncture can help you live a better life. You can also connect them on Facebook for more updates.

‘Astonishing’ figures show 800 Scottish NHS staff earning over £140,000

Sunday, November 28, 2010

In tough financial times we need to make sure that our focus is on patient care and every penny is spent in the most efficient way.

Over 800 National Health Service staff in Scotland are earning more than £140,000 each year—more than First Minister Alex Salmond. New figures also reveal that 3,000 NHS workers are earning over £100,000. One NHS board alone, NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde, employs 893 staff earning more than £100,000, and 181 being paid over £140,000.

Jackie Baillie, health spokeswoman for the Labour Party, which uncovered the figures, said they were “astonishing”, and urged health boards to examine if savings can be made by reducing salaries of top earners. “This is a far better option than cutting frontline staff like nurses and midwives. In tough financial times we need to make sure that our focus is on patient care and every penny is spent in the most efficient way.” She further said: “In the current economic climate, it is impossible to justify huge salaries for consultants and senior executives when health boards are planning 4000 job losses this year, including 1500 nurses and midwives.”

Britain’s largest health service industrial union, Unison, questioned the amount of money the NHS was paying. A spokesperson said: “Unison doesn’t begrudge anybody the rate of pay for the job but obviously our membership will be concerned that while they are to face a pay freeze and people delivering frontline services are losing their jobs, there is a cohort of folk who appear to earn more than the most senior politician in the land.”

Wikinews interviews Professor Gigi Foster about pandemic control in Australia

Wednesday, August 11, 2021

On July 22, Wikinews interviewed Professor Gigi Foster of School of Economics at the University of New South Wales, Sydney, Australia about measures that the government took to stop the spread of COVID-19, a virus that caused what the World Health Organization declared a pandemic last year.

Professor Foster is on faculty with the School of Economics at the University of New South Wales. She wrote an Op-Ed in the Sydney Morning Herald, arguing for a case against the so-called “lockdowns” – measures which the state governments in Australia were implementing to stop the spread of COVID-19. These measures included things like limiting the size of gatherings, directing certain business types such as gyms to close or operate at reduced capacity, limiting where people may travel and restricting residents to only leaving their home if they have a reasonable excuse to do so.

In New South Wales, these restrictions were implemented as Public Health Orders, signed by Brad Hazzard, the Minister for Health and Medical Research. Mr Brad Hazzard has authority make these Orders under the Public Health Act 2010, section 7.

Wikinews reached out to Professor Gigi Foster, asking for comment.

The interview was conducted amid an outbreak of COVID-19 in New South Wales, that has resulted in an increase of restrictions from June 26. At the day of interview, residents were legally allowed to go outdoors only for essential shopping, medical care, and exercise, in groups of no more than two people unless of a common household. On July 28, authorities extended these restrictions until the end of August.

The current outbreak of the COVID-19 Delta strain started from ‘patient zero’, reportedly a driver, which includes transporting international flight crew, as NSW Health wrote on June 16. A week later, on June 24, the driver commented that he thought that he caught the virus from a local cafe, where another patron was visibly unwell.

New South Wales Premier Gladys Berejiklian has said that “our mission is to allow our citizens to live as safely and freely as possible”, having announced that only authorized workers — people whose occupation is essential — could leave home in selected higher risk regions in south-west of Sydney until July 30.

Work of the construction industry has been stopped for several days, and resumed this week with requirement that the construction workers get tested for COVID-19 regularly.

Over 30 killed in a Baghdad restaurant bombing

Thursday, November 10, 2005

A suicide bomber detonated himself in a crowded Baghdad restaurant Thursday morning at approximately 9:30 local time (0630 GMT). 35 were reportedly killed and 25 wounded in the blast. Responsibility for the attack was claimed by Al-Qaeda in Iraq.

The restaurant was frequented by US-backed Iraqi security forces, often the target of Sunni Arab rebels and Islamist Al-Qaeda groups. A police officer said that at least four Iraqi police patrols were in the restaurant at the time of the bombing.

The bombing was one of the biggest attacks in Baghdad in recent months. A statement on an Islamist website used by Al-Qaeda said that the attack was a part of an Al-Qaeda campaign to counter recent raids by US and Iraqi forces on suspected militant strongholds near the Syrian border.

The attack came just a day after the bombing of hotels in Amman, Jordan, attacks also claimed by Al-Qaeda.

The Key To Long Term Prostate Health

The Key to Long-Term Prostate Health

by

P. RodgersJust because we are alive and our hearts are beating we assume our blood is moving as it should. Each year thousands of men are treated for inflamed prostates, in most cases those cases of prostatitis could have been prevented with the help of supplements for prostate health. The key to long-term prostate health is dietary prevention, fitness and early diagnosis. The good news is that there are dietary and lifestyle factors that may reduce the occurrence and severity of benign prostatic hyperplasia. On the other hand, dietary prevention is recognized as the changes in food consumption patterns necessary to decrease cancer development. Since prostate cancer is one of the most common forms of cancer in men, every man should consider trying to improve the health of this vital gland naturally through diet and supplements. But all of you should keep in mind that no multivitamin, or any supplement for that matter, is a valid substitute for a good diet. A diet low in animal meat may decrease your risk for developing prostate and other cancers. Dietary fiber derived from beans, lentils and peas in high quantities have been associated with decreasing prostate cancer risks while promoting prostate health. Diets enriched with wheat bran and guar gum induce 10-20% reductions in serum cholesterol and LDL in both normo- and hypercholesterolemic subjects and have the ability to blunt the hypertriglyceridemic effects of diets high in carbohydrate and low in fiber. A diet of legumes, fresh fruit and vegetables, grains, and eggs is not expensive. Condiments for instance soy and ketchup are element of the indispensable diet. Fitness is the bodies ability to recover from a workload, be it mental or physical. Fitness is a necessity for countless reasons, the least of which may be for coping with our daily lives. True fitness is not about losing weight because of society’s misplaced judgments or trying to fit in with the normal” thin crowd. True fitness is about looking good, having lots of energy all the time, feeling good about yourself, and taking care of yourself. This disease has considerable human, social and economic consequences which require an important development of prevention strategies. While complete prevention of benign prostatic hyperplasia and prostate cancer may not attainable, strong evidence suggests that dietary changes and supplementation with a variety of nutrients can reduce the incidence and mortality of prostate cancer. The highest prostate cancer prevention rate was found in patients with the lowest baseline selenium levels. Zinc and selenium are two dietary intake markers that have been strongly associated with BPH prevention and diagnosis. It is now commonly recognised by most gerontologists that there is no age limit to an effective prevention action. Supplements for prostate health are not meant to cure disorders, but they can help strengthen a man’s resistance against these conditions. Most supplements for prostate health are found in ordinary natural foods that people can easily get their hands on. In fact, a range of dietary supplements and herbal medicines offers new ways to prevent or treat prostate disease, and cancer in general. Before changing your diet, or adding supplements to your diet, or beginning an exercise program, everyone should consult a qualified and licensed health practitioner; a physician, dietician or similar professional.

Under-reporting of human Bird Flu infections poses worldwide threat

Monday, November 21, 2005

Possible under reporting of bird flu infections in China and other Southeast Asian countries may be promoting an illusory sense that human infections are very limited. Common press reports only describe fewer than 130 people as infected with H5N1 avian flu and that fewer than 70 have died worldwide. Yet, there are enormous problems getting accurate data, especially in a country like China with a population of more than a billion.

“Reporting a suspected bird flu infection in bird or humans is a very unlikely event,” said Dr. Shoshana Zimmerman of the eHealth Institute. She is also a founder of www.birdflubeacon.com, a site dedicated to bird flu issues. “There are very few incentives to report, and lots of reasons to refrain from reporting. From the viewpoint of local rural small farmers, there is little to be gained and much to be lost by reporting an infection. The worse threat is that their flocks could be killed, leaving them destitute.”

There are many factors which mitigate against reporting bird or human infections of bird flu.

 • The deaths of chickens, ducks, and birds are common events for farmer. Even when a large number die at one time they may see no purpose in reporting the deaths.
 • When a human dies in locations with little or no medical services, the rural farmer’s priority for discerning the cause of death may be low.
 • In rural areas most people are not taken to hospitals when they are sick.
 • Bird flu symptoms are not widely known. If the symptoms are not known, they will not be recognized and reports of possible bird or human infections can not be made.
 • The expenses required for detection are those of proper collection and shipment of samples to one of approximately 200 laboratories worldwide, as well as the testing procedure that requires a two week period of waiting before results are obtained.
 • The lack of incentive for countries to report large scale outbreaks as it may lead to widespread panic and economic loss, as occurred with SARS. These factors can be seen at work in the way that the first bird flu death was reported in China,” Dr. Zimmerman stated.

A young woman, Zhou Maoya, died after returning home to the village of Yantan in Annui province to prepare for her wedding. Her family has stated that they did not take her to the hospital because they thought it would not do any good. Officials also note rural Chinese also often cite relatively expensive medical costs as a reason for not seeking treatment when sick.

Although initially authorities attributed her death to pneumonia the resulting political pressure prompted China to invite the World Health Organization to send experts to investigate. The authorities then rescinded the previous position and attributed her death to bird flu based on the similarity of the symptoms that she was reported to exhibit with those of bird flu. The village was quarantined and journalists were denied access. It is not known how many others might be infected in the village. Official announcements were made of plans to vaccinate and cull birds.

A local government official, Fan Qian, told AFP that it was believed Zhou was infected while she was outside of the province.

Fan Tan, a local official, told AFP news that 1,000 birds in Yantan had been culled (killed). Plans were announced to vaccinate 2 million poultry in the area, a huge and difficult task.

Zhang, another official, said authorities had met with all villagers to give them flu vaccinations and to tell them how to protect themselves against the bird flu virus, including not consuming poultry products. It is known that flu vaccinations do not protect against bird flu.

Villagers and local officials minimized the threat. In outlying areas of Yantan, residents said that they did not know of any new outbreaks. Other possible infections have been attributed to similar common causes but there have not been any tests performed validating those attributions.

Fan Litan, a peasant woman from Fantu village, about 2 miles from Yantan, lost many of her ducks, and chickens and also a dog; she has attributed these deaths to the acts of hooligans. She said her family had been extremely frightened when her animals suddenly died. “We were scared to death,” said Fan, standing next to a red sign posted on the outside wall of her home that said: “Prevention and control by the masses is basic for people.” Fan said ducks and chickens are all healthy but she admitted that she had stopped eating poultry. No testing of these birds has been reported yet.

According to a recent AFP report from Liuchang, 59 miles south of Yantan, the obstacles to identifying infections are enormous.

Like many, one Liuchang villager named Wang Hemin said he was concerned and would keep a closer eye on his ducks and chickens, but felt no immediacy since the infection was not in his province. He learned about bird flu on TV, and is aware that officials have come to his village of 2,700 people to warn residents about the virus. They offered guidelines: they told people that poultry which die suddenly could have contracted bird flu and should not be eaten or sold and that such an incident should also immediately be reported. However, the symptoms of H5N1 bird flu were not directly described.

Residents have not yet been fully informed of what symptoms to look for in ill poultry–they are fever, diarrhea, teary eyes and swelling in the legs of the birds. Though a pledge was made earlier in the week to vaccinate 2 million birds immediately, no bird vaccinations in this area have been reported yet.

In another nearby village, Nazahuang, chickens scuttle in and out of houses. One resident, Fan Jiexu, 73, said no officials had yet warned her village to take precautions. Throughout rural areas, it is customary for chickens to scuttle in and out of homes. Ducks and bird often die and are eaten by villagers when it is believed safe to do so.

China has reported 17 avian flu outbreaks as of this week. Despite the Chinese government issued high alerts, critical information is not being adequately communicated to some rural villages. The size of the poultry population, the common and normal occurrence of poultry death on farms, and status of roughly 70% of the poultry population as being kept in backyards are factors complicating infection control.

The head of World Health Organization’s China office, Henk Bekedam, is aware that slow reaction to bird flu threats and difficulty monitoring poultry in the world’s most populous country makes control of its spread challenging.

Testing is required to confirm H5N1 virus, and positive test results lead to the killing of nearby flocks. The incentive for many villagers, officials, and governments to minimize reports of H5N1 virus infections and severe medical and economic complications for making confirmations of infection are obstacles opposing complete and full reporting of the spread and infection rates of the virus.
