Aircraft makes emergency landing at Edinburgh Airport

Monday, July 30, 2007

A Flybe, Bombardier Q400, had to make an emergency landing at Edinburgh Airport in Scotland after it had engine troubles on its scheduled flight from Manchester.

Thirty-six passengers were onboard flight BE7220 when the captain made the Mayday call to air traffic control at approximately 07:40 BST. The captain was forced to shut down one of the plane’s two turboprop engines before finally landing safely at Edinburgh Airport at 07:50 BST.

Upon landing the plane was met by fire engines and other emergency vehicles before taxiing to the terminal building.

Jim Mulhall, a passenger on board the plane said, “When the captain told us they were going to cut an engine everyone went quiet, probably because they were apprehensive.”

Normal operations at the airport have since resumed, while the aircraft is expected to resume commercial flying this afternoon.

Andrea Muizelaar on fashion, anorexia, and life after ‘Top Model’

Monday, November 26, 2007

In the 18 months since Andrea Muizelaar was crowned winner of the reality TV series Canada’s Next Top Model, her life has been a complete whirlwind. From working in a dollar store in her hometown of Whitby, Ontario, to modeling haute couture in Toronto, she had reached her dream of becoming a true Top Model.

But at what cost? Unknown to casual television viewers, Muizelaar had been enveloped in the eating disorder anorexia nervosa, which inevitably became too much for her to bear. She gave up modeling and moved back to Whitby, where she sought treatment for her disorder, re-entered college, and now works at a bank. Where is she now? Happy and healthy, she says.

Recently Andrea Muizelaar sat down with Wikinews reporter Mike Halterman in a candid interview that stretched to nearly two hours, as she told all about her hopes and aspirations, her battle with anorexia, and just what really happened on Canada’s Next Top Model.

Canine Heat Stress And How To Treat It

By Jeff Nenadic

There are typically two aspects of a dog’s behavior and life that determine their resistance levels to extreme temperatures – obesity and old age. Dogs that have a “pushed in” type of facial appearance normally have some respiratory issues anyway, but they become much more susceptible to the respiratory side effects of temperature extremes than dog’s that have a normal appearance.

Remember first and foremost that dogs do not perspire like humans do, so they normally eliminate excess heat through their respiration – i.e. panting. Regarding the types of dogs that have a pushed in countenance, when they are left to roam about outside, they cannot endure long periods of direct exposure to sunlight and higher temperatures like the other breeds of dogs can. Leaving them exposed to these conditions will most likely result in them suffering with heat stress, especially if they are confined or restrained as in being left in a vehicle.

Heat stress can become life-threatening, so be cautious. The following signs are clear indicators that your dog is beset with this condition:

* a dazed look

* a hot and dry tongue

* a rapid heartbeat

* may lapse into unconsciousness

* red mucous membranes in the mouth

* very dry skin

Prolonged periods of exposure to high temperatures will oftentimes result in the dog’s body temperature not returning to the normal level and there is a greater likelihood that they can also suffer irreversible damage.

You cannot delay with this issue if you have determined that they are suffering with heat stress – it can be deadly and that cannot be stressed enough! The best immediate option is to bring the dog indoors to a cooler environment in the hopes of their body temperature attempting to return to its normal level. Call your vet immediately after you have brought the dog indoors.

If there is a considerable distance that you will have to travel, then get some instructions over the telephone so that you can begin treating the dog at home. This will assist you in stabilizing the dog so that you can get them in your vehicle and transport them to the veterinarian. The ability to contact your vet combined with the distance to their facility will determine whether or not you need to begin remedial treatment on your own.

Your first remedial step would be to immerse the dog’s body in cold water in order to begin the temperature lowering process taking care to prevent the dog from collapsing in the water. Stimulate the flow of cooling blood to their brain and heart by extending the legs and massaging their skin. If you can, check their temperature rectally ever 10-15 minutes so you can see if their body temperature is dropping. It should drop continually but be careful that it doesn’t fall below 103 °F (39.4 °C).

Once the temperature has rescinded to a normal level, remove the dog from the cold water, dry them off, and then continue checking their temperature every 10-15 minutes for the next 45 minutes to an hour. Their temperature should not rise again, but if it should, then re-immerse the animal and attempt to contact the vet.

Corruption endangers Brazilian government

Sunday, May 29, 2005

Brazil —Denunciations of political corruption threaten the Brazilian government. The most recent case involves a deputy of the political party PTB (who supports the government of the Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva) in a scandal of the services of post office.

Lula’s government representatives said that they will investigate all the denunciations and affirmed that the government is a victim of political enemies.

BBC Outside Broadcasts to be sold to Satellite Information Services

Saturday, March 8, 2008

Satellite Information Services Limited (SIS), the racecourse television company part-owned by William Hill (19%) and Ladbrokes (23%), has been named by the BBC as the preferred bidder for its Outside Broadcasts division, one of three active businesses within BBC Resources Ltd. Other SIS shareholders include, Thales (Racal) (23%), United Business Media (19%), Racecourse Association (10%) and the Tote (6% – all figures rounded).

SIS Chief Executive David Holdgate would not comment on the terms of the deal, thought to be between £20m and £50m, but said it would be “an ideal acquisition for SIS” and “a perfect fit with our existing SISLink and sports coverage”. The company has long-term contracts with other leading broadcasters, such as Sky and ITV and provides satellite links for live sport and news.

In a statement, the BBC said that it intended to exchange contracts and transfer the Outside Broadcasts business and around 300 staff in the near future, with Andrew Thornton, BBC project director for the sale of the division, saying that “SIS offered the BBC a good deal and best value for licence fee payers”. Mark Tugwell, Director, BBC Outside Broadcasts, added “it’s time for our business to flourish under new ownership, without the constraints of BBC ownership”.

The transfer would mean that SIS will be covering major sporting events including the Beijing Olympics for the BBC in August 2008.

The division — part of the BBC’s commercial subsidiary, BBC Resources Ltd — owns a fleet of 15 television production units plus sound, support and communications vehicles (making a total fleet of over 90) and is based in self-contained premises in Langley, three miles north-west of Heathrow. These units cover events ranging from music festivals and state occasions, to Wimbledon and World Cup football.

On 7th March 2008 the surprise announcement was made that the studio operation — employing around 350 staff at Television Centre and Elstree — would be “retained by the Corporation as a commercial business” after failing to find a buyer.

The fate of this third business has yet to be announced with the BBC continuing negotiations with the preferred bidder “understood to be a company based in west London“.

Was not included in the privatisation — in early October 2007 it was announced that the business was to close within six months and the entire stock sold as a complete collection. The sale fell through, and on 14th February 2008 the department ceased trading, with a BBC spokeswoman adding that “the arrangements [the corporation] was pursuing have not worked out and BBC Resources is currently inviting interested parties to consider making an offer to purchase.”

BBC Costume and Wigs — which had been trading as part of BBC Studios — was the second largest collection of its kind in the UK, after the leading suppliers Angels The Costumiers.

Cosmetic Surgery India

Submitted by: Maheshwari Manral

India is now counted among the biggest and most progressive centres for cosmetic surgical procedures and this trend is likely to continue in the near future. Many experts believe that the cosmetic surgery niche in India has the potential to compete with the bigger volumes of cosmetic surgical procedures seen in nations like China and USA. This is largely due to the fact that cosmetic surgery has evolved beyond the traditional concept of being risky or impractical procedures that were demanded by women only who were overtly conscious about their appearance. Today, people across India understand that cosmetic surgery represents a specialized and highly advanced niche of plastic surgery that helps to attain a quotient of happiness with negligible risks and with greater affordability. This change in the mindset is owed to several factors.

Cosmetic Surgery in India is Widely Acknowledged for its Effectiveness & Safety

Firstly, the media has become much more penetrative, providing honest and more detailed information regarding the safety of cosmetic surgical procedures. Confessions of having undergone cosmetic surgery by movie stars, TV artists and other public figures have helped people to shed their inhibitions about opting for plastic cosmetic surgery. Increasingly, people are acknowledging the fact that a plastic surgery is at par with adopting a new diet or exercise regimen since all such activities are aimed at the same goal, i.e. to improve one s appearance. However, plastic cosmetic surgery presents an incomparable advantage to any other approach, i.e. the results are immediately visible and the can be customized with great precision.

Decoding Cosmetic Surgery Trends in India

The spurt in Cosmetic Surgery in India is also due to the increased marketing efforts of cosmetic clinics that now provide the latest in global cosmetic surgery techniques. Such technological advances mean that most cosmetic procedures are performed within 1-to-2 hours, needing minimal recovery time and many of them are essentially micro-surgical or non-surgical procedures that present no risk of procedural complications. Skin-tightening and Anti-aging cosmetic surgeries remain the most demanded of cosmetic procedures across both the genders in India and this is similar to worldwide trends in terms of the kind of cosmetic procedures people opt for. Cosmetic procedures that can instantly render a more youthful and aesthetically-pleasing appearance include Neck-lift, Face-lift, Breast-lift and Blepharoplasty. This trend is understandable since contemporary lifestyles are very hectic, leaving little time for most people to indulge in regular exercising or adopt the ideal dietary patterns. This in turn acts as a deterrent to their appearance but a timely and safely-executed cosmetic procedure can help in accentuating the appearance and correcting any flaws. In such cases, opting for cosmetic procedures can be interpreted as a lifestyle requirement.

Cosmetic Surgery in India Breaks Age & Gender Barriers

Most significantly, the popularity of cosmetic surgeries is not limited to women in India. Men in India represent an aggressively expanding segment of the cosmetic surgery segment and thus procedures like male breast reduction, laser hair removal and liposuction are being commonly demanded by Indian men. In some cases cosmetic surgeries present themselves as the only, effective solution. Common examples of this include mothers who are struggling with their post-partum weight-gain or people who were born with defunct or slightly misshapen facial features. Here, cosmetic surgery takes over a more corrective format, helping the people to undertake a pleasing makeover and regain their subdued self-confidence. Thus, cosmetic procedures aimed at augmentation or reduction of certain body and facial parts have become very common in the age-group of 30 to 40 in India. Most of the cosmetic procedures can be safely undertaken upon completing the age of 18 years.

Understand How Plasticcosmeticsurgeryindia.org is Your Cosmetic Surgery Guidance Provide

Though the overall awareness about Plastic cosmetic surgery in India has increased significantly, most people are yet not aware about the basics of various plastic cosmetic procedures. Similarly, most prospective cosmetic surgery hopefuls have little information regarding critical issues as to how to evaluate or find a dependable cosmetic/plastic surgeon this is where Plasticcosmeticsurgeryindia.org comes to your rescue. Australian artist Pro Hart dies

Tuesday, March 28, 2006

Pro Hart, the self-taught, internationally-acclaimed Australian artist, died at home in Broken Hill on March 28 after family members decided to cease his medication. The 77-year-old had been ill with motor neurone disease. Family members described his passing as peaceful. Hart is a household name in Australia.

Hart’s son, John Hart, says a State funeral is being organised for his father. He says his father lost the ability to paint about six months ago. Pro Hart’s son David today said the funeral for the “brushman of the bush” will be held in the far-western New South Wales mining city of Broken Hill next Tuesday. “It will be held next Tuesday”, he said, “probably in the town’s civic centre.”

Born Kevin Charles Hart in Broken Hill on May 30, 1928, his mining mates nicknamed him ‘Professor’ due to his passion for invention. He started painting “cheeky” pictures on the wooden beams of the mines he worked in. Hart went to few art classes and started painting full-time in 1958.

Since then, he has exhibited all over the world, including London, New York, Paris and Tokyo. He also illustrated several books. Hart’s preoccupation with art began as a teenager on his family’s sheep station near Menindee.

His work hangs in collections all over the world. Agent Amanda Phillips says Hart was one of Australia’s most renowned artists yet his paintings are not in the National Gallery of Australia. “He’s a great Australian, I mean he’s been given an MBE for his services to art, he’s been honoured all around the world, his work hangs in major collections around the world, why isn’t he displayed here in Australia? A spokeswoman for the National Gallery confirmed they had a “very limited collection” of Pro Hart’s works although no paintings.

Acting teacher and director Milton Katselas dies at age 75

Tuesday, October 28, 2008

Acting teacher and director Milton Katselas died Friday at age 75, after suffering from heart failure at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, California. He began the Beverly Hills Playhouse in 1978 and taught acting classes there to noted actors including George Clooney and Gene Hackman. Katselas is survived by a sister and two brothers.

Katselas directed an off-Broadway production of Edward Albee‘s The Zoo Story, and received a Tony Award nomination for his 1969 direction of Butterflies are Free. Actress Blythe Danner won a Tony Award for her role in Butterflies are Free under Katselas’ direction. He moved to California to direct the film version of that play, and went on to direct films and television movies. Actress Eileen Heckart received an Academy Award for her role in the film version of Butterflies are Free.

Katselas directed the San Francisco and Los Angeles productions of the play P.S. Your Cat Is Dead! by playwright James Kirkwood, Jr. In his author’s notes in the publication of the script, Kirkwood acknowledged Katselas, and wrote that the plays were “directed with incredible energy and enthusiasm by Milton Katselas, to whom I am extremely indebted”.

Katselas directed the television movie Strangers: Story of a Mother and Daughter, and actress Bette Davis received an Emmy Award for her role in the movie. Katselas taught many famous actors including Michelle Pfeiffer, Richard Gere, Robert Duvall, Jack Lemmon, Al Pacino, Goldie Hawn, Christopher Walken, Burt Reynolds, George C. Scott, Elizabeth Taylor, Richard Burton, Alec Baldwin, and Patrick Swayze. Katselas was credited with being able to nurture actors with raw talent so that they could develop strong Hollywood careers. He utilized innovative techniques in his courses – one course called “Terrorist Theatre” had a simple premise: successfully get an acting role within six weeks or leave the course.

He grew up in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania to parents who had immigrated from Greece, and graduated from Carnegie Mellon. He studied acting with Lee Strasberg in New York at the Actors Studio, and received advice from directors Joshua Logan and Elia Kazan.

Katselas was a prominent Scientologist, and a July 2007 profile on Katselas in The New York Times Magazine observed that some of his students stopped taking courses at the Beverly Hills Playhouse because they felt they had been pressured to join the Church of Scientology. According to the article, Katselas credited Scientology founder L. Ron Hubbard “for much of his success in life”, and one of his students works at Scientology’s Celebrity Centre. The article commented that some in Los Angeles view the Beverly Hills Playhouse as “a recruitment center for Scientology”.

Katselas met L. Ron Hubbard after moving to California, and began studying Scientology in 1965. The New York Times Magazine reported that he had reached the level of “Operating Thetan, Level 5, or O.T. V.” in 2007. According to The New York Times Magazine when Scientologists proceed up the “The Bridge to Total Freedom” they learn the story of Xenu, and that: “75 million years ago the evil alien Xenu solved galactic overpopulation by dumping 13.5 trillion beings in volcanoes on Earth, where they were vaporized, scattering their souls.” A Church of Scientology publication, Source, lists Katselas as reaching O.T. V. in 1989.

He is brilliant, and knows me so well as a person and an actress that he gets the most out of me.

Though some actors felt pressured to join the Church of Scientology after taking courses at the Beverly Hills Playhouse, at least one individual felt Katselas was not active enough with the organization. Actress Jenna Elfman left the Beverly Hills Playhouse because she felt Katselas was not committed enough to Scientology. Katselas had previously directed Elfman in half of Visions and Lovers: Variations on a Theme, two one-act plays about relationships that he had written himself. In 1999 Katselas had planned to adapt the script of Visions and Lovers to a film version, and Elfman was set to reprise her role from the play. In an article in Variety about the project, Elfman commented on her experience working with Katselas: “He is brilliant, and knows me so well as a person and an actress that he gets the most out of me.”

Other prominent Scientologist actors who have studied under Katselas include Giovanni Ribisi, Jason Lee, and Leah Remini. According to Rolling Stone, Katselas also recruited actress Kelly Preston to Scientology. Actress Nancy Cartwright (the voice of Bart Simpson), told Scientology publication Celebrity that Katselas motivated her to get more active in Scientology, and she stated she took the organization’s “Purification Rundown” and her life “took off completely”.

Life is an endless unspooling of art, of acting, of painting, of architecture. And where did I learn that? From Milton.

Anne Archer was introduced to Scientology while studying at the Beverly Hills Playhouse, as was former Scientologist and now outspoken critic actor Jason Beghe. Beghe told Roger Friedman of FOX News in April 2008 that “He [Katselas] gets kickbacks”, and that he was brought to a Scientology center by fellow Beverly Hills Playhouse classmate Bodhi Elfman, Jenna Elfman’s husband. In a 1998 article for Buzz Magazine, Randye Hoder wrote “In his class, Katselas is careful not to label anything as a tenet of Scientology, but there is no question that the church’s influence seeps into the playhouse.”

Anne Archer’s husband and fellow Scientologist, producer Terry Jastrow, commented to The New York Times Magazine that Katselas changed the way he experiences life on a day-to-day basis: “I go out in the world and look at human behavior now. I see a woman or man interacting with a saleslady, and I see the artistry in it. Life is an endless unspooling of art, of acting, of painting, of architecture. And where did I learn that? From Milton.”

Actor Anthony Head of Buffy the Vampire Slayer spoke highly of Katselas in a 2002 interview with San Francisco Chronicle: “He’s this wonderfully intuitive teacher and his premise is basically: The only real barriers are the ones we put in front of ourselves. If you say, ‘My character wouldn’t do that’ — bollocks! Ultimately it’s you who wouldn’t say that. Who knows what your character might do.” In the acknowledgements of her 2004 autobiography Are You Hungry, Dear?: Life, Laughs, and Lasagna, actress Doris Roberts wrote: “I thank my friend and acting teacher, the incredible Milton Katselas, for his insights, wisdom, and inspiration, which have helped make me the actress that I am.”

I really care about the craft of acting. It’s absolutely necessary to take the time and patience to really develop an actor.

Katselas authored two books: Dreams Into Action: Getting What You Want, first published in 1996 by Dove Books, and Acting Class: Take a Seat, which came out earlier this month. Dreams Into Action, a New York Times Bestseller, sought to modify motivational acting exercises to the field of business.

In an interview in the 2007 book Acting Teachers of America, Katselas commented on his experiences as an acting teacher over the years: “I have very special teachers here at the Beverly Hills Playhouse—some have been with me for over twenty-five years. I believe that to make a difference over the long haul, we need to train teachers. I really care about the craft of acting. It’s absolutely necessary to take the time and patience to really develop an actor.”

Toilet on International Space Station breaks

Wednesday, May 28, 2008

According to a NASA status report, the lone toilet on the International Space Station (ISS) has broken, leaving the astronauts on board having to use a rigged-up system of bags to collect any liquid waste.

According to NASA, the collection fan motor broke sometime last week after one of the crew used the Russian-made toilet in the space station. The NASA status report quotes the crew as hearing “a loud noise and the fan stopped working”. Russian officials have yet to solve the cause of the breakage and fix it. The seven-year old toilet has broken once before but not for a long period of time.

The crew had been temporarily using the toilet in the Soyuz capsule, but this has a very limited capacity.

NASA officials are now considering flying in replacement parts for the toilet and putting them on Space Shuttle Discovery, which is due to launch on Saturday and scheduled to arrive at the ISS on Monday.

Treasure Hunting Geocaches In Random Trite Events

Click Here To Know More About:

By Francine Juhasz, Ph.D.

Your garbage disposal goes on the blink; the balls your neighbors dog plays with keep landing in your backyard; youre kissed by your aunt and reek of her perfume; a bird crashes into your office window; and someone has dumped a box of erasers on your front lawn.

These randomly occurring trivial incidents intrude upon our lives relentlessly. We cant escape them. We dont even pick them. They pick us, then trap us in a web of the commonest, most boring stuff that ever existed.

Most of them are so dull, irksome and obnoxious we consider them a total waste of our time and energy. They interfere with our plans. They irritate and distract us.

They can even plunge us into foul moods.

And yetmany of these common ordinary events that happen to us daily are bristling with jaw-dropping surprises! Looked at in the right way, they can be helpful, supportive, compassionate and even wise.

Treated as geocaches, they could make any day superb!

The word geocaching refers to GEO physical and human landscapes on earth and to CACHING, the process of hiding and finding treasure in human landscapes.

Since May 3, 2000, when David Ulmer placed the first cache near Portland, Oregon, hundreds of thousands of geocachers have been hunting down more than a million geocaches. These are registered on various websites online, and are placed in over 100 countries around the world on all seven continents.

Normally, using multi-million dollar satellites via a hand-held GPS unit, geocachers look for hidden stashes on remote hiking trails, dense forests and even within urban city centers. The rewards? Ostensibly dollar-store trinkets. However, every geocacher fan knows theres more. The excitement of the chase, the meeting of difficult challenges, visiting new places, learning new things.

However, theres a new game in which random daily events are becoming the latest geocachers paradise. Similar to a scavenger hunt and because of its broad gamut of personal rewards, this new sport is becoming a wholesome pastime for individuals of all ages, as well as for their families, friends, classes and work teams. Its all about discovering many trite daily events do contain caches of considerable personal value. Treasure thats personally relevant treasure. Treasure thats real treasure, so artfully hidden it takes cleverness and persistence to hunt it down.

With no monetary expense, and using sharp perception instead of a GPS unit, you also, as treasure hunter, can learn to spot trite daily happenings that are geocaches and claim their rewards hiding in plain sight.

The challenge of the game is to encourage your mind to get off its beaten path and shift to experience a new dimension in which these puzzle caches can be identified and opened.

Geocaching with trivial daily events is finding secret treasures hidden within them. And this is done by decrypting the drama the randomly occurring insignificant event is portraying. You decode the gesture of the mini-drama so it speaks to your personal goals.

This is a highly enjoyable game that can be played alone or with friends and family through the maze of daily life. Its a simple, easy way to enjoy your everyday world becoming an exotic new environment, hauntingly compassionate, arty and entertaining.

The game can be played on three levels.

Level 1: You can play this game merely for fun, for mystery, as a new source of entertainment, and for jaw-dropping surprises.

Level 2: You can play this game for moral and emotional support, to improve your moods and your love of life, and for more joy. You can play this game for practical tips for greater success in your job or relationships, for direction and self-guidance.

Level 3: You can even play it to bolster your faith in life, for purpose and meaning, and as a catapult into other dimensions of reality, sacred or exotic.

The method is the same for all three levels. Only your intention is different.

So when you perceive a trite event as a geocache, it becomes a geoCOACH that can even give you personal advice! Or highly personalized information and advice you cant get in any other way. Or moral and emotional support (imagine!) Or a new avenue of thought regarding a particular problem you might have. Or clues to long-forgotten talents or never-before discovered parts of yourself. Or new spaces and dimensions of experience, some of these numinous and sacred and mystical others exotic, humorous, helpful and fun. And much, much more.
