Wikinews interviews Professor Gigi Foster about pandemic control in Australia

Wednesday, August 11, 2021

On July 22, Wikinews interviewed Professor Gigi Foster of School of Economics at the University of New South Wales, Sydney, Australia about measures that the government took to stop the spread of COVID-19, a virus that caused what the World Health Organization declared a pandemic last year.

Professor Foster is on faculty with the School of Economics at the University of New South Wales. She wrote an Op-Ed in the Sydney Morning Herald, arguing for a case against the so-called “lockdowns” – measures which the state governments in Australia were implementing to stop the spread of COVID-19. These measures included things like limiting the size of gatherings, directing certain business types such as gyms to close or operate at reduced capacity, limiting where people may travel and restricting residents to only leaving their home if they have a reasonable excuse to do so.

In New South Wales, these restrictions were implemented as Public Health Orders, signed by Brad Hazzard, the Minister for Health and Medical Research. Mr Brad Hazzard has authority make these Orders under the Public Health Act 2010, section 7.

Wikinews reached out to Professor Gigi Foster, asking for comment.

The interview was conducted amid an outbreak of COVID-19 in New South Wales, that has resulted in an increase of restrictions from June 26. At the day of interview, residents were legally allowed to go outdoors only for essential shopping, medical care, and exercise, in groups of no more than two people unless of a common household. On July 28, authorities extended these restrictions until the end of August.

The current outbreak of the COVID-19 Delta strain started from ‘patient zero’, reportedly a driver, which includes transporting international flight crew, as NSW Health wrote on June 16. A week later, on June 24, the driver commented that he thought that he caught the virus from a local cafe, where another patron was visibly unwell.

New South Wales Premier Gladys Berejiklian has said that “our mission is to allow our citizens to live as safely and freely as possible”, having announced that only authorized workers — people whose occupation is essential — could leave home in selected higher risk regions in south-west of Sydney until July 30.

Work of the construction industry has been stopped for several days, and resumed this week with requirement that the construction workers get tested for COVID-19 regularly.

Over 30 killed in a Baghdad restaurant bombing

Thursday, November 10, 2005

A suicide bomber detonated himself in a crowded Baghdad restaurant Thursday morning at approximately 9:30 local time (0630 GMT). 35 were reportedly killed and 25 wounded in the blast. Responsibility for the attack was claimed by Al-Qaeda in Iraq.

The restaurant was frequented by US-backed Iraqi security forces, often the target of Sunni Arab rebels and Islamist Al-Qaeda groups. A police officer said that at least four Iraqi police patrols were in the restaurant at the time of the bombing.

The bombing was one of the biggest attacks in Baghdad in recent months. A statement on an Islamist website used by Al-Qaeda said that the attack was a part of an Al-Qaeda campaign to counter recent raids by US and Iraqi forces on suspected militant strongholds near the Syrian border.

The attack came just a day after the bombing of hotels in Amman, Jordan, attacks also claimed by Al-Qaeda.

The Key To Long Term Prostate Health

The Key to Long-Term Prostate Health

by

P. RodgersJust because we are alive and our hearts are beating we assume our blood is moving as it should. Each year thousands of men are treated for inflamed prostates, in most cases those cases of prostatitis could have been prevented with the help of supplements for prostate health. The key to long-term prostate health is dietary prevention, fitness and early diagnosis. The good news is that there are dietary and lifestyle factors that may reduce the occurrence and severity of benign prostatic hyperplasia. On the other hand, dietary prevention is recognized as the changes in food consumption patterns necessary to decrease cancer development. Since prostate cancer is one of the most common forms of cancer in men, every man should consider trying to improve the health of this vital gland naturally through diet and supplements. But all of you should keep in mind that no multivitamin, or any supplement for that matter, is a valid substitute for a good diet. A diet low in animal meat may decrease your risk for developing prostate and other cancers. Dietary fiber derived from beans, lentils and peas in high quantities have been associated with decreasing prostate cancer risks while promoting prostate health. Diets enriched with wheat bran and guar gum induce 10-20% reductions in serum cholesterol and LDL in both normo- and hypercholesterolemic subjects and have the ability to blunt the hypertriglyceridemic effects of diets high in carbohydrate and low in fiber. A diet of legumes, fresh fruit and vegetables, grains, and eggs is not expensive. Condiments for instance soy and ketchup are element of the indispensable diet. Fitness is the bodies ability to recover from a workload, be it mental or physical. Fitness is a necessity for countless reasons, the least of which may be for coping with our daily lives. True fitness is not about losing weight because of society’s misplaced judgments or trying to fit in with the normal” thin crowd. True fitness is about looking good, having lots of energy all the time, feeling good about yourself, and taking care of yourself. This disease has considerable human, social and economic consequences which require an important development of prevention strategies. While complete prevention of benign prostatic hyperplasia and prostate cancer may not attainable, strong evidence suggests that dietary changes and supplementation with a variety of nutrients can reduce the incidence and mortality of prostate cancer. The highest prostate cancer prevention rate was found in patients with the lowest baseline selenium levels. Zinc and selenium are two dietary intake markers that have been strongly associated with BPH prevention and diagnosis. It is now commonly recognised by most gerontologists that there is no age limit to an effective prevention action. Supplements for prostate health are not meant to cure disorders, but they can help strengthen a man’s resistance against these conditions. Most supplements for prostate health are found in ordinary natural foods that people can easily get their hands on. In fact, a range of dietary supplements and herbal medicines offers new ways to prevent or treat prostate disease, and cancer in general. Before changing your diet, or adding supplements to your diet, or beginning an exercise program, everyone should consult a qualified and licensed health practitioner; a physician, dietician or similar professional.

Under-reporting of human Bird Flu infections poses worldwide threat

Monday, November 21, 2005

Possible under reporting of bird flu infections in China and other Southeast Asian countries may be promoting an illusory sense that human infections are very limited. Common press reports only describe fewer than 130 people as infected with H5N1 avian flu and that fewer than 70 have died worldwide. Yet, there are enormous problems getting accurate data, especially in a country like China with a population of more than a billion.

“Reporting a suspected bird flu infection in bird or humans is a very unlikely event,” said Dr. Shoshana Zimmerman of the eHealth Institute. She is also a founder of www.birdflubeacon.com, a site dedicated to bird flu issues. “There are very few incentives to report, and lots of reasons to refrain from reporting. From the viewpoint of local rural small farmers, there is little to be gained and much to be lost by reporting an infection. The worse threat is that their flocks could be killed, leaving them destitute.”

There are many factors which mitigate against reporting bird or human infections of bird flu.

 • The deaths of chickens, ducks, and birds are common events for farmer. Even when a large number die at one time they may see no purpose in reporting the deaths.
 • When a human dies in locations with little or no medical services, the rural farmer’s priority for discerning the cause of death may be low.
 • In rural areas most people are not taken to hospitals when they are sick.
 • Bird flu symptoms are not widely known. If the symptoms are not known, they will not be recognized and reports of possible bird or human infections can not be made.
 • The expenses required for detection are those of proper collection and shipment of samples to one of approximately 200 laboratories worldwide, as well as the testing procedure that requires a two week period of waiting before results are obtained.
 • The lack of incentive for countries to report large scale outbreaks as it may lead to widespread panic and economic loss, as occurred with SARS. These factors can be seen at work in the way that the first bird flu death was reported in China,” Dr. Zimmerman stated.

A young woman, Zhou Maoya, died after returning home to the village of Yantan in Annui province to prepare for her wedding. Her family has stated that they did not take her to the hospital because they thought it would not do any good. Officials also note rural Chinese also often cite relatively expensive medical costs as a reason for not seeking treatment when sick.

Although initially authorities attributed her death to pneumonia the resulting political pressure prompted China to invite the World Health Organization to send experts to investigate. The authorities then rescinded the previous position and attributed her death to bird flu based on the similarity of the symptoms that she was reported to exhibit with those of bird flu. The village was quarantined and journalists were denied access. It is not known how many others might be infected in the village. Official announcements were made of plans to vaccinate and cull birds.

A local government official, Fan Qian, told AFP that it was believed Zhou was infected while she was outside of the province.

Fan Tan, a local official, told AFP news that 1,000 birds in Yantan had been culled (killed). Plans were announced to vaccinate 2 million poultry in the area, a huge and difficult task.

Zhang, another official, said authorities had met with all villagers to give them flu vaccinations and to tell them how to protect themselves against the bird flu virus, including not consuming poultry products. It is known that flu vaccinations do not protect against bird flu.

Villagers and local officials minimized the threat. In outlying areas of Yantan, residents said that they did not know of any new outbreaks. Other possible infections have been attributed to similar common causes but there have not been any tests performed validating those attributions.

Fan Litan, a peasant woman from Fantu village, about 2 miles from Yantan, lost many of her ducks, and chickens and also a dog; she has attributed these deaths to the acts of hooligans. She said her family had been extremely frightened when her animals suddenly died. “We were scared to death,” said Fan, standing next to a red sign posted on the outside wall of her home that said: “Prevention and control by the masses is basic for people.” Fan said ducks and chickens are all healthy but she admitted that she had stopped eating poultry. No testing of these birds has been reported yet.

According to a recent AFP report from Liuchang, 59 miles south of Yantan, the obstacles to identifying infections are enormous.

Like many, one Liuchang villager named Wang Hemin said he was concerned and would keep a closer eye on his ducks and chickens, but felt no immediacy since the infection was not in his province. He learned about bird flu on TV, and is aware that officials have come to his village of 2,700 people to warn residents about the virus. They offered guidelines: they told people that poultry which die suddenly could have contracted bird flu and should not be eaten or sold and that such an incident should also immediately be reported. However, the symptoms of H5N1 bird flu were not directly described.

Residents have not yet been fully informed of what symptoms to look for in ill poultry–they are fever, diarrhea, teary eyes and swelling in the legs of the birds. Though a pledge was made earlier in the week to vaccinate 2 million birds immediately, no bird vaccinations in this area have been reported yet.

In another nearby village, Nazahuang, chickens scuttle in and out of houses. One resident, Fan Jiexu, 73, said no officials had yet warned her village to take precautions. Throughout rural areas, it is customary for chickens to scuttle in and out of homes. Ducks and bird often die and are eaten by villagers when it is believed safe to do so.

China has reported 17 avian flu outbreaks as of this week. Despite the Chinese government issued high alerts, critical information is not being adequately communicated to some rural villages. The size of the poultry population, the common and normal occurrence of poultry death on farms, and status of roughly 70% of the poultry population as being kept in backyards are factors complicating infection control.

The head of World Health Organization’s China office, Henk Bekedam, is aware that slow reaction to bird flu threats and difficulty monitoring poultry in the world’s most populous country makes control of its spread challenging.

Testing is required to confirm H5N1 virus, and positive test results lead to the killing of nearby flocks. The incentive for many villagers, officials, and governments to minimize reports of H5N1 virus infections and severe medical and economic complications for making confirmations of infection are obstacles opposing complete and full reporting of the spread and infection rates of the virus.

Sales Team Psychology

By Kurt Mortensen

Goal setting is powerful way of keeping sales psychology on the up-and-up. We all know that goals dictate future performance by giving team members a sense of purpose and direction. I can think of nothing less motivating than not knowing why Ive been asked to do something. Instill in your team members what the end objective is and explain to them the necessary steps to get there. It is much easier to put forth the effort when we can answer who, what, where, when, why and how. Make sure your goals are realistic and attainable, but lofty enough that they are inspiring.

It is a general rule of thumb that greater or more difficult goals actually increase performance. The reason for this tendency is that loftier goals or objectives set higher expectations, and expectations in turn strongly influence behavior. The power of effective goal setting or setting a target can be seen in the following example: In a particular production plant, workers with little experience were divided into two groups. One group was told to simply observe the experienced workers and try to be able to perform at a skilled level themselves within twelve weeks.

The second group received specific weekly goals that were progressively more and more demanding. Needless to say, the second group fared much better. Similarly, Yale University once conducted a striking twenty-year study that found that the 3 percent of students who put their goals in writing had significantly higher incomes than those who did notin fact, higher incomes than the other 97 percent of students combined. From these examples, it is obvious that proper goal setting goes a long way toward promoting sound sales psychology amongst your team members.

Years of observation and study have produced personality profiles of what are considered to be outstanding salespeople. Perhaps the most recognized of these profiles is the model that was developed by Gallup Management Consulting Group. Gallup has spent more than two decades interviewing hundreds of thousands of top salespeople to help corporate clients form and develop their own sales teams. Its findings suggest that the top four qualities of top-tier producers are: 1) solid persuasion and closing skills; 2) self-motivation; 3) strong work ethic and 4) excellent people and relationship skills.

Why do I highlight these findings? It is likely that as a sales manager, you already look for these skills when you hire someone anyway. But how do you enhance these essential sales characteristics after your recruits are on board so that your team can become even better? My hope is that by giving you four key concentration areas, you can streamline your efforts into getting the greatest results with the most focused effort. When you are trying to draw out any one of these characteristics, or any characteristic for that matter, it is helpful to assess the kind of personalities youre dealing with. For some, a strong drive to close a sale exists just because they possess a need to win. Whether that win translates into financial rewards, recognition, the glory of being at the top or whatever, some individuals just have an almost instinctive need to win. This need is compelling enough that they are not deterred by long hours, rejection or time away from their family.

For others, it is not just about winning in and of itself. Beyond that, some individuals have a competitive edge that relishes the defeat of otherseven their own colleagues. Half of the victory for these types of people is seeing others left in the dust. I believe that some competition can be a good thing, but youve got to be on your toes to buffer this type of personality. If you think pitting your team members against each other might actually create unhealthy rivalries and negative feelings, then youve got to have a way to counteract those negative effects.

Next, there are those personalities who are very ego-driven. They arent motivated by a need to conquer others. Rather, they want success solely for their own personal satisfaction. This is the type of person who is constantly out to beat her/his own previous records. In other words, these types of individuals compete with themselves. Moreover, they are very focused on being experts. While this competitive orientation has significant strong points, its main downside is that it is too self-focusedeven in a well-intended wayand not conscious enough of the team element. The self-motivated person is the one you want to be sure you can draw into the team so you have the best that both approaches have to offer.

Then you have those individuals who seem to get the most satisfaction out of seeing their customers happy. They dont really have the burning desire to win or compete, but they are very much into relationship building. These people are naturally gifted at being empathetic, caring and good listeners. They are the ones who are much more inclined to stay in touch with clients after the sale has come and gone.

As you step back and evaluate what kind of team member mix you have, realize that no one is purely one temperament or another. We tend to be a combination of at least two of these different types of producers. However, we are usually dominated much more by one area than the others. Your job is to get a grip on what you have to work with and figure out how to make all the pieces of the puzzle fit together so your team solidly represents all of the best qualities of top sales producers.

In closing this section, I wanted to touch on the topic of working with a rep who has hit a plateau. Why? Because its a very real obstacle that sometimes happens even to the very best. The most typical cause for a plateau is simply feeling burned out. In this case, a very obvious solution would be to lighten the stalled reps responsibilities or even give her/him some time off. On the other hand, it may be that the rep is burned out with doing the same old thing. If thats the case, simply changing her/his responsibilities would provide the necessary stimulation to get her/him moving again. New responsibilities could be things like training, forecasting or recruiting. Even performing the same tasks with new prospects or in a different community may alleviate boredom and present exciting, new challenges.

Sometimes it works to have reps come up with their own solutions. They may be more apt to pursue something they feel theyve come up with on their own than something that is imposed. Furthermore, this way they really know whats at the heart of the issue and would, therefore, likely know the best remedy better than anyone else. Lastly, review the possibility of how bonuses and other forms of recognition might spur renewed motivation. This approach is especially effective when your team members financial needs are already being met and theyre looking for reward and acknowledgment in other forms. In the next section, well discuss what kinds of rewards and incentives work the best.

My Ex Boyfriend Wants To Be Friends! Why You Need To Jump At This Chance

Your ex boyfriend wants to be friends. That’s disappointing to you, isn’t it? That’s because you’ve been holding out hope that you two would recapture the romantic connection you once shared and get back on track with being boyfriend and girlfriend. Now, he’s gone and thrown a monkey wrench into the entire thing by saying that he’d love to be “your friend.” Your first reaction may be to tell him that’s not enough but before you do that, stop and think about it for a moment. Although he’s not offering you exactly what you want, he is trying to establish a new connection with you. It is worth it to pursue a friendship or should you just cut all ties and try to get over the man?

In life we tend to subscribe to the “all or nothing” approach. In romance that typically means that for someone like you, if you can’t get your boyfriend back as your boyfriend, you’re not sure you want him back at all. After all, the idea of him being with someone else is truly painful, isn’t it? It’s hard to imagine just hanging out with him as a platonic friend with the knowledge that he’s got an actual girlfriend waiting to spend time with him. You really can’t approach this situation from a glass half-full perspective though. You need to start viewing it as a gift that you can steadily work on growing until it really offers you exactly what you want.

In other words, if you embrace the idea of being friends with your ex boyfriend you’ll be showing him that you care about him regardless of whether you two are a couple or not. That speaks volumes about your maturity level and also how unselfish you are. Your boyfriend will be impressed that you so willingly welcome the idea of being a friend to him.

You must follow this up by showing him exactly how great a friend you can be. That means being supportive without crowding him. He likely knows that you still have strong feelings for him but don’t allow those feelings to motivate your actions. You must present yourself as a neutral friend who only wants the best for him. That means tempering the things you say and do when you’re around him. For instance, don’t repeatedly ask about his current dating status. If he wants you to know what’s going on in that department, he’ll certainly share. Also, avoid talking about your failed relationship. He’s well aware that things between the two of you didn’t work in the past so there’s absolutely no need to bring that to his attention again.

If you can be there for him through thick and thin, over time he’s going to start seeing you as an essential part of his life. You need to be the person who picks up the pieces when he feels things are overwhelming. If you can be there for him, he’ll soon realize that you’re the most important friend he has and that will open his heart back up to a relationship where you two are much more than just friends again.

Documents reveal al-Qaeda wants war between U.S. and Iran, Iraq insurgency weakening

Friday, June 16, 2006

Documents found at the hideout of Abu Musab al-Zarqawi revealed al-Qaeda‘s desire to force a war between the U.S. and Iran. The document was translated by Iraqi National Security Adviser Mouwafak al-Rubaie, but the authenticity of the information could not be confirmed to be from al-Qaeda.

The documents reveal that al-Zarqawi was planning to destroy the relationship between the Shi’ite Iraqis and the United States. The document also said the U.S. military was hurting the insurgency by seizure of weapons, disrupting their financial outlets, massive arrests, and training Iraqi security forces.

The translated document said, “Generally speaking and despite the gloomy present situation, we find that the best solution in order to get out of this crisis is to involve the U.S. forces in waging a war against another country or any hostile groups.”

Mowaffaq al-Rubaie said, “These documents have given us the edge over al-Qaeda and (they) also gave us the whereabouts of their network, of their leaders, of their weapons and the way they lead the organization and the whereabouts of their meetings.”

Slow Down And Start Living With Yoga

Submitted by: Vanessa Stoessel

In a world that continuously keeps spinning faster, where the pace of our everyday life is increasing, it can feel as if there are not enough hours in a day to accomplish tasks and that we are in a constant race to catch up with life as opposed to truly living it. People are looking for outlets to distract themselves from the daily frustrations of work, relationship troubles and financial stress. Sleep deprivation, unhealthy diet, extra pounds and mood swings are all too familiar for most. How can we get out of this uncomfort zone how can we improve our quality of life? The secret? – Yoga!

The millions of people who take up the practice of yoga everyday can see its endless benefits. To ask what the benefits of yoga are is almost comparable to ask what the benefits of water are. Like the liquid of life, yoga can be essential in improving your physical well-being and improving your quality of life.

But let s get down to it how can yoga really improve your life?

The physical benefits of yoga on the body are the easiest for one to observe. Practicing yoga for a length of time will increase your strength, flexibility, and posture, giving you a more naturally balanced body that you can be comfortable with. Yoga poses called asanas, gently and safely stretch your joints and muscles, releasing any tension you might have in your body as well as giving your joints youthful fluidity.

Some styles of yoga such as Ashtanga and power yoga are more spirited than others and will be more on the physically demanding scale as opposed to the mentally demanding forms of yoga. These yoga styles are demanding exercises that keep you burning off those unwanted calories while giving you the figure you have always dreamt about. Other styles focus more on mental rather than physical strengths, but no matter which type of yoga you find best suited for you, you will sure realize that yoga is the fountain of youth everyone has been looking for.

The less obvious benefit of yoga that might not seem evident at first but that is no less essential is its ability to improve your daily quality of life. The breathing techniques it teaches allows you to improve your mental capacity to concentrate as well as helping you to reduce your stress level which is easily heightened in the daily grind. Studies have also shown that yoga can be incredibly effective in fighting heart disease. The breathing technique that is taught with yoga has the exceptional ability to reduce one s heart rate and blood pressure. This is ideal for people suffering from hypertension, heart disease, and stroke. But most of call the benefits of yoga that are invisible to the unopened third eye, are happiness, feelings of gratitude and a heightened sense of awareness.

If after reading about all these benefits you re thinking well, if yoga is comparable to water, why couldn t I just drink a few glasses of H20 and get the same effect? The upside about yoga is that it is more portable and more sustainable than water – you can take your knowledge and practice of yoga anywhere you go, and no one can take it away from you. Throw your mat down on the desert sands in Jordan, practice pranayama on a secluded island in Thailand, or simply hold the lessons of peace in your heart and mind while meditating on a mountaintop in Peru and you will reap the benefits of a healthy and happy life.

Wikinews interviews Eric Saussine, director of the James Bond fan film Shamelady

Wednesday, July 16, 2008

The James Bond film series is one of the most popular and successful, having grossed over US$4 billion worldwide. The suave, sophisticated secret agent has secured his place in popular culture as the definitive action hero that has appeared in twenty-three films between 1954 and 2006.

Daniel Craig was announced as the seventh actor to portray 007 in late 2005, making his debut in the 2006 smash hit Casino Royale. While fans await Craig’s second outing in Quantum of Solace, due later this year, they have been able to watch Shamelady, a fan film made by the French film production company Constellation Studios.

Shamelady is a tribute to Ian Fleming, the author of the James Bond novels on which many of the films are based, and EON Productions, the makers of the official 007 films. The film was first released in 2007 and runs just under an hour long. It can be downloaded from Constellation’s website or viewed on YouTube.

Legally, the filmmakers cannot profit from Shamelady, but they didn’t make it for the money, rather the thrill of creating an original Bond film. The plot is fairly simple, and reminiscent of Casino Royale. Bond is sent to a casino to nab a vicious crime lord, but gets betrayed by a fellow agent in the process. Viewer reaction to the film was positive for the most part, and Constellation Studios has now planned a sequel to Shamelady, which director Eric Saussine speaks of in the interview below.
