Obama succeeds Bush as 44th president of the United States

Tuesday, January 20, 2009

Today, the official ceremony ushering in Barack H. Obama II as the new president of the United States took place at the United States Capitol in Washington, D.C.. A 21-gun salute, as well as the playing of four ruffles and flourishes and “Hail to the Chief”, marked the moment he assumed power from his predecessor, George W. Bush.

Bush’s second term as President of the United States, which began on January 20, 2005, expired with the swearing-in of the 44th President of the United States, Barack Obama, at noon EST (UTC-5), under the provisions of the Twentieth Amendment to the United States Constitution.

Bush performed his final official act this morning, welcoming Barack Obama and Michelle to the White House for coffee before the swearing-in, shortly before 10am EST, and then accompanied them there by motorcade to attend the ceremony. Last week, Bush had made his farewells to the nation in a televised address, saying that the inauguration turns a page in race relations. “Obama’s story — his black father was from Kenya, his white mother from Kansas — represents “the enduring promise of our land,” said Bush.

Pope Benedict XVI on Tuesday called on Obama to seek “understanding, co-operation and peace” among nations. “I offer cordial good wishes, together with the assurance of my prayers that Almighty God will grant you unfailing wisdom and strength in the exercise of your high responsibilities,” the Pontiff said.

The National Mall gates at the inaugural ceremony opened early, with official introductions beginning around 11:30am EST. On the west front lawn of the U.S. Capitol, Senator Dianne Feinstein provided the call to order and welcoming remarks, shortly after followed by invocation by the Rev. Rick Warren and a musical performance by Aretha Franklin.

Vice President-elect Joseph R. Biden, Jr., a Democrat, who was elected Vice President in the 2008 presidential election, took his oath of office, succeeding Dick Cheney. Biden took his oath at 11:57am EST from Associate Justice John Paul Stevens.

Supreme Court Chief Justice John Glover Roberts, Jr. then administered the oath of office to Obama, under Article II, Section 1, Clause 8. “I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will faithfully execute the office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my ability, preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution of the United States. So help me God,” Obama swore, using the 1861 President Lincoln Inaugural Bible.

First Lady Michelle LaVaughn Robinson Obama and daughters Malia Ann and Sasha, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, and Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi were among the record-setting crowd of over 2 million people, including more than a million people that filled the National Mall. Vice President Dick Cheney arrived in a wheelchair, having pulled a muscle in his back while moving, White House spokeswoman Dana Perino said.

Obama has decided to follow tradition and use his full name, including his middle name Hussein, regardless of its past and present use by detractors as an effort to slander his image. The advanced scheduled program stated that the inaugural address was to be delivered by “the President of the United States, The Honorable Barack H. Obama.”

The President delivered his inaugural address in front of Capitol Hill with the theme “A New Birth of Freedom,” commemorating the 200th anniversary of the birth of Abraham Lincoln, said Feinstein.

Obama focused on the restoration of public confidence and personal “responsibility,” reassuring recession-weary Americans they can rebound from hard times. He conveyed to the world his desire to fix a battered U.S. image overseas. He asked the nation to reject the “culture of anything goes” and to restore a national value system that honors responsibility and accountability. Elizabeth Alexander recited a poem, followed by the benediction by Rev. Joseph E. Lowery. The National Anthem was thereafter played by The United States Navy Band “Sea Chanters.”

Over 200 million viewers worldwide had watched inauguration videos and live streams provided online by a number of news organizations and online video broadcasting companies over the internet. The event was also available live to select iPhone users.

Following his speech, President Obama escorted former President George W. Bush at 12:53pm EST as they left for a departure ceremony. Bush lifted off, ending his 8 years as president, with Obama waving goodbye from the courtyard of the US Capitol.

At 2:35pm EST in the Capitol’s Statuary Hall, at the inaugural luncheon attended by Obama, it is reported that Ted Kennedy had a stroke. Paramedics arrived and took the senator to a hospital.

A parade extended for over two hours in the afternoon. It included 15,000 people, 240 horses, dozens of marching bands, two drum and bugle corps, and one mariachi band from Espanola, New Mexico.

Just after 4pm EST, Obama and his wife joined the celebrating crowds on Pennsylvania Avenue. After a short time waving to the masses, they returned to the Presidential Limousine, a 2009 Cadillac, which transported them to the White House. The First Limo has replaced President Bush’s Cadillac DTS Presidential Limousine that rolled out in 2004.

Mr and Mrs Obama plan to attend a total of ten official inaugural balls, including the Neighbourhood Ball, the Obama Home States (Illinois and Hawaii) Ball, the Biden Home States (Pennsylvania and Delaware) Ball and the Youth Ball. American R&B singer-songwriter Beyoncé has been planned to perform the first dance song. The Obamas will return to the White House, their new home, following the last ball.

Latham quits as Australian Labor leader

Tuesday, January 18, 2005

AUSTRALIA —Following hospitalisation for pancreatitis and ongoing speculation about his leadership, Mark Latham has resigned from his roles as leader of the Australian Labor Party (ALP) and also the Federal Member for Werriwa. He cited as reasons the media harassment, and a desire to put his family and health first.

Mr Latham became leader of the ALP just over a year ago, on 2 December, 2003, leading the party during the October 2004 federal election. He was hospitalised in the run-up to that election, also for treatment of pancreatitis. Following the defeat of his party, his leadership increasingly came under question.

He fell ill a second time almost simultaneously with last year’s Indian Ocean tsunami disaster. His failure to issue a statement on the tsunami drew criticism from the media and calls for his resignation from within his own party, even after it was revealed that he had been incapacitated at the time.

Mr Latham’s resignation sidesteps the possibility of a leadership challenge by other members of the party and leaves no clear successor.

Trends, Challenges, And Opportunities In The Food Packaging Machinery Industry

Trends, Challenges, and Opportunities in the Food Packaging Machinery Industry

by

Brandon Vincent

Food is one of the most ubiquitous products packaged and, paradoxically, among the most challenging to manage. In the packaging machinery sector, the lion s share (60%) of all such equipment is purchased by the food and beverage sector. In terms of global food processing and packaging machinery, 45% is acquired by members of the European Union (EU). In a recent survey of C-level executives in the sphere, challenges to the food and beverage packaging industry were consistently identified as:

Pressurized margins

Customer sensitivity, and,

The volatility and increase of input costs

The key drivers underlying these challenges tend to be consistent with those of other industries: tighter regulations, environmental issues, increased demand for recyclable materials, spiking raw material costs, stricter government regulations, and greater competition. In the survey, solutions offered by respondents included creating partnerships that optimize working capital, reducing costs, product innovation, and price reduction.

In a recent article, Vera Fritsche, Consultant for Packaging Machinery at VDMA (Verband Deutscher Maschinen- und Anlagenbau, the German Engineering Federation) discussed industry challenges in more detail, along with innovations and trends on the horizon. Consumer demand for ever more convenient packaging and for bio (or organic) foodstuffs, continues. Likewise, consumer demand for smaller units of food products (individual portions), grows. Consequently, food producers/packagers are challenged by unprecedented demand for a broader variety of food packaging (size/type) and greater turnover of food product. Currently, in the EU 100,000 new products are introduced each year and that number is growing. Managing the twin strains of smaller batch sizes and increased product and format changes, are top of mind throughout the industry.

As the bio (or organic) food market grows, so will the necessity of mechanisms to ensure the optimal shelf-life of these products from food processing/packaging facility to table. Other concerns include greater hygiene measures, energy consumption reduction, and optimization of resources.

Using Technology to Measure Up

EU food packagers and processors have to contend not only with increased competition from their western counterparts, but balance that against escalating demand for their products within emerging markets. To manage this, technology and the innovative application of it to address industry concerns is of prime concern and interest. One solution that is value-additive for overall operational efficiency (OOE) is computerized maintenance management software (CMMS).

As health and safety standards become more rigorous and the load demand for food packaging equipment increases, that equipment must be properly cleaned and maintained more frequently. Shorter cleaning cycles are linked to increased efficiency, reduced/eliminated cross-contamination, and increased productivity. Without adequately maintaining packaging equipment (preventive maintenance PM), undesirable microorganisms can enter the food supply chain. Through the kind of proper preventive maintenance which CMMS supports, food packagers can continue to ramp up production while maintaining compliance with applicable government health and safety standards.

Advantages of Using CMMS for Food Processors/Packagers:

Supports Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI) , Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP), and ISO 22000 Audit preparation and compliance

Root cause(s) analysis

360 degree view of a facility s machines, systems and buildings in an intuitive hierarchy

Schedules PM on the most appropriate assets (e.g., high-volume and high-risk machinery), first

Inventory tracking ensures the facility always has spare parts

One last consideration that EU food and beverage providers are building into their operations is the optimization of their energy consumption. As noted by insiders, concentrating on energy efficient drives and procedures is not enough. Resource efficiency is an important keyword . Toward improved energy and resource efficiency, food and beverage packagers and processors can utilize CMMS to accurately track energy consumption, identify under- or poorly performing assets, isolate energy vampires, and assess which assets are more profitable replaced or repaired. Underperforming assets tend to be key contributors to poor energy/resource conservation, by using EAM/CMMS systems that provide real-time, historical and current data analysis about a facility s assets, food packagers/processors can minimize energy/resource waste and improve the bottom-line.

Brandon Vincent is the author of this article discussing the difficulties and opportunities that are helped within the food packing industry. Using tools such as

advanced CMMS software

and

Facilities maintenance software

the industry is becoming more efficient and safe as it advances technologically.

Globe Trotting In Style Without Hurting Your Budget

Once you ve had a taste of the luxurious life, there s just no going back. This is mainly the reason why I strive to live a comfortable life though my means hardly allow for it. All thanks to my womanizer of a dad who left us not just without father but also without money and to my drunkard of a mom who is around but is better off gone. There was once a time when I can afford first class Boulder car service with but loose change; now I rely on my lucky stars to get a cheap limo service in Denver so to not get people talking about my rags-to-riches drama. Given the situation of my dysfunctional family, you wouldn t believe the extent of my scams just so I can still live in comfort day after day. My acts run from eating for free by feeding off friends groceries to getting drunk out of my wits without paying the tab by making out with the bartender.

With my knack for coming up with strategies to accomplish goals favorable to me, it s no wonder that most people call me Miss Mojo. I m all about achieving things even those seemingly unachievable. Given this, I ve managed to come up with a Little Black Book of getting great deals on the cheap: Live Large, Spend Little.

Queen of Corkage

We re all aware of the ridiculous prices of alcoholic beverages in bars but not all can come up with ways to get through this pressing problem. Not to be mistaken as part of the unknowledgeable crowd, I ve devised a surefire plan to get the most out of nights out on the town without spending much. When going out for drinks, why not bring your own? What are huge carry-alls for if you don t put them to good use? Stock your bulky designer bags with bottles of the cheapest liquor and be your own bartender by mixing drinks up under the table.

Nice Wheels

Way back in the golden days even my Labrador retriever had its own Denver airport car service whenever we fly out of the country. Then there came a time when I rode the ordinary fare bus even when attending special occasions. It wasn t until I attended my cousin s grandiose wedding that I realized I still could roll in nice wheels. With everyone busy at the ceremony, I went out to look for the fancy wedding limo from a Denver ground transportation company. I went behind the wheel and was cruising down town in no time. I also did the same thing with a prom limo service in Denver, CO.

Free Bed & Breakfast

Perhaps the easiest trick anyone could have under their sleeves: act impossibly drunk. True friends will always buy this trick, offering to spend the night in their homes all the while thinking you re in a drunken stupor. What s a few slurred words, exaggerated tripping on your feet and some bit of self humiliation in exchange for a roof above your head.
